What is KDM Gold?
Ans: KDM Gold is a type of gold which comprises 92 per cent pure gold and the remaining 8 per cent contains cadmium alloy hence the term KDM gold came into usage. The mixture of cadmium was done to attain a high standard of purity in gold.
How many karats does KDM gold constitute?
Ans: The 916 KDM carat gold is the same as the 22-karat gold which is currently available in jewellery markets in India. The term 916 KDM term is used to describe the purity of gold be it coins, jewellery, ornaments, and so on. 22-Karat gold or 916 KDM gold is made up of 91.6 per cent pure gold and the remaining part consists of a mixture of alloys to help easily craft the ornamental pieces.
Why is KDM gold not used now?
Ans: Earlier, the pure gold metal was mixed with cadmium and the resulting mixture was called KDM gold. The use of cadmium did cause serious health issues for artisans working as goldsmiths, though it did not affect the purity of the metal and hence KDM has been banned by BIS.
