The Liquefied Petroleum Gas, most commonly known as LPG is a valuable co-product which is produced from gas fields and during refining of crude oil. The gas stream which is present in natural gas fields is processed to separate the individual gases and it includes propane, isobutane, ethane, butane, methane and pentanes.
All the impurities are removed during the process. The processed gas is funnelled into their own supply streams. The common types of LPG which include butane and propane are captured and it is stored in the liquefied form.
During the refinery process, various co-products like asphalt base, gasoline, naphtha, heating oil, kerosene and LPG will be obtained.
LPG is currently a renewable source of energy. The advancement of Science and Technology has helped the Scientists to create a genetically engineered version of the common E-coli bacteria which produces propane. The bacteria will consume sugar and are tricked through genetic modification and it helps a couple of enzymes, in making propane instead of their normal cellular material.
The propane which is produced through genetically engineered version is chemically identical to the regular propane which is obtained during refining of crude.
