US President Donald Trump Enacts 50% Tariff On Indian Imports Citing Security Concerns
President Trump has enacted a 25% tariff on Indian imports, raising the total to 50%. India’s Ministry of External Affairs has condemned the decision, underlining its national interests. The situation could lead to further sanctions affecting US-India relations.
US President Donald Trump has enacted an Executive Order that imposes an additional 25% tariff on imports from India. This decision raises the total tariff on Indian goods to 50%. The move was justified by Trump citing national security and foreign policy concerns, along with other trade laws. He argued that India's import of Russian oil poses a significant threat to the United States.
The initial duty will be effective from August 7, with the additional levy taking effect after 21 days. This will apply to all Indian goods entering the US, except those already in transit or meeting specific exemptions, as reported by ANI.

India's Response to Tariffs
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in India has described the US's decision as "unfair, unjustified and unreasonable." They emphasized that New Delhi will take necessary actions to safeguard its national interests. The MEA stated that India's oil imports from Russia are based on market factors aimed at ensuring energy security for its 1.4 billion citizens.
In a statement, the MEA expressed disappointment over the US targeting India for actions similar to those taken by other countries in their national interest. "It is therefore extremely unfortunate that the US should choose to impose additional tariffs on India for actions that several other countries are also taking in their own national interest," they said.
Potential Secondary Sanctions
During a press briefing at the White House, Trump hinted at more "secondary sanctions" being possible. When asked about similar plans for China, he responded, "Could happen. Depends on how we do. Could happen." This suggests potential future measures against other nations importing Russian oil.
When questioned about singling out India while other countries like China also buy Russian oil, Trump replied, "It's only been 8 hours. So let's see what happens. You're going to see a lot more...You're going to see so much secondary sanctions."
The situation remains tense as both nations navigate these trade challenges. The imposition of tariffs and potential further sanctions could impact diplomatic relations and economic ties between the US and India.
