Trump Warns 10% Tariffs on BRICS Nations Over ‘Anti-American Policies’; Tells Countries to Choose Sides
President Trump's announcement of a 10% tariff policy against countries aligned with BRICS highlights rising trade tensions and geopolitical shifts. As BRICS expands, the implications for global negotiations are significant.
US President Donald Trump announced a new tariff policy targeting countries aligning with BRICS. He stated, "Any Country aligning themselves with the Anti-American policies of BRICS, will be charged an ADDITIONAL 10% Tariff. There will be no exceptions to this policy. Thank you for your attention to this matter!" This was shared on Truth Social.
The BRICS group initially included Brazil, Russia, India, and China when it first convened in 2009. South Africa joined later, and last year, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates became members. The bloc has been expanding its influence and membership over the years.
BRICS' Stance on Global Issues
BRICS has shown symbolic support for Iran by condemning military strikes from Israel and the US on strategic sites. This stance reflects the group's collective approach to international conflicts involving its members. Despite tensions with the US, BRICS did not directly criticize Trump or his administration in their summit declaration.

In April, Trump had threatened both allies and adversaries with punitive tariffs but later offered a temporary reprieve due to market reactions. The threat of tariffs remains unless trade partners reach agreements by August 1. This deadline underscores Trump's aggressive trade policy stance.
Trade Tensions and Tariff Threats
Trump's recent tariff announcement follows earlier threats of unilateral levies on trade partners. These measures aim to pressure countries into negotiating deals favorable to the US. The looming August deadline adds urgency to these negotiations.
The BRICS group has also condemned violence in regions like Gaza and Pahalgam while calling for global reform. Their unified voice highlights their growing role in addressing international issues and advocating for change.
Despite Trump's tariff threats, the BRICS summit declaration avoided direct criticism of the US or its president. This diplomatic approach may reflect efforts to maintain dialogue while addressing contentious issues.
The evolving dynamics between the US and BRICS highlight ongoing geopolitical shifts. As BRICS expands its membership and influence, its interactions with major powers like the US become increasingly significant.
