Trump Cancels USD 21M US-India Voter Fund; Elon Musk Slams High Tariffs

The United States President, Donald Trump, has voiced his support for the Department of Government Efficiency's (DOGE) decision to cancel a $21 million fund intended for increasing voter turnout in India. He cited India's economic growth and high tariffs as reasons for this decision. Trump remarked that India is already financially robust and imposes significant tariffs on US goods.

US Cancels Funding for Voter Turnout in India

The DOGE, led by Elon Musk, announced the cancellation of the $21 million fund on February 16. This amount was part of a larger $486 million package meant for the "Consortium for Elections and Political Process Strengthening." The announcement was made public through a tweet from DOGE, highlighting the redirection of US taxpayer dollars.

In a press conference, Trump questioned why such a substantial amount was allocated to India, given its financial status. He stated, "Why are we giving $21 million to India? They have a lot more money. They are one of the highest taxing countries in the world in terms of us; we can hardly get in there because their tariffs are so high."

Political Reactions in India

The decision has sparked political debate within India. Amit Malviya from the Bharatiya Janata Party criticised the fund as an "external interference" in India's electoral process. He questioned who would benefit from such funding, implying it would not be advantageous to the ruling party.

Meanwhile, Congress has demanded an investigation into these allegations. Ajay Maken, a senior Congress leader, expressed opposition to any foreign involvement in India's democratic processes. He emphasised that such interventions are unwarranted and should be condemned.

Former Chief Election Commissioner S Y Quraishi also addressed these concerns. According to PTI reports, he denied any use of US funds during his tenure to boost voter turnout in India.

Other Cancelled Initiatives

Besides the voter turnout fund for India, other initiatives were also scrapped by DOGE. This includes $10 million earmarked for voluntary medical male circumcision in Mozambique. The department's announcement outlined various projects that will no longer receive US taxpayer funding.

Trump reiterated his respect for India and its Prime Minister but questioned the necessity of allocating $21 million specifically for voter turnout efforts. His comments come amidst broader discussions about foreign aid and its implications on domestic politics.

The cancellation of these funds reflects ongoing debates about international financial assistance and its role in global political processes. As countries navigate their relationships with one another, decisions like these highlight differing perspectives on economic priorities and sovereignty.
