Karnataka Government to Establish Plastic Parks in Mangaluru and Vijayapura for Industry Growth

The Karnataka government is set to develop plastic parks in Mangaluru and Vijayapura, enhancing the state's plastic sector. The initiative aims to create jobs and support polymer enterprises through dedicated facilities.

The Karnataka government is advancing the state's plastic industry by setting up specialised plastic parks in Mangaluru and Vijayapura district. These parks will feature advanced facilities for polymer and plastics businesses, according to Large and Medium Industries Minister M B Patil. The initiative aims to boost the sector's growth and development.

Karnataka Plans Plastic Parks in Mangaluru

During the launch of PLASTINDIA 2026, Patil announced that the Central Institute of Petrochemicals Engineering and Technology (CIPET) will open a new campus in the Mangaluru Plastic Park. This campus will focus on training skilled workers and promoting research in polymer science. The event was part of preparations for the 12th International Plastics Exhibition and Conference, scheduled in New Delhi from February 5 to 10, 2026.

Plastic Industry Growth

India’s plastics industry is experiencing significant growth. Over the last ten years, it has expanded from approximately USD 15 billion to USD 37 billion. Projections suggest it will reach USD 50 billion by 2026. This expansion is expected to create more jobs and enhance prosperity across the nation.

The sector currently employs around four million people, with expectations to generate 5.5 million jobs by 2026. Its contribution to India's GDP stands at about 1.5 per cent, projected to rise to nearly 2 per cent by 2026. As a rapidly growing sector, it is driving industrial progress nationwide.

Infrastructure Development

Karnataka is supporting its vision with substantial infrastructure development. The state boasts over 200 industrial areas covering more than 85,000 acres. It is also establishing new investment zones to cater to future industrial needs, ensuring readiness for upcoming demands.

In Vijayapura district's Mulawada Industrial Area, 200 acres will be allocated for plastic industrialists. Plots will be distributed based on application requirements, facilitating tailored support for businesses in this sector.

Addressing Plastic Waste

Minister Patil highlighted the importance of managing plastic waste effectively for environmental sustainability. He emphasised finding solutions to this issue and assured government support for entrepreneurs willing to engage in waste management ventures.

"Effective waste management is critical to achieving a sustainable environment," Patil stated, underscoring the government's commitment to supporting initiatives addressing this challenge.

Karnataka's efforts reflect a comprehensive approach towards fostering growth in the plastics sector while addressing environmental concerns. The establishment of dedicated plastic parks and investment in infrastructure are pivotal steps towards achieving these goals.
