'Good News' On India-US Deal Coming Soon? Min Piyush Goyal Hints AT Trade Pact Amid US Tariff Tensions

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal recently stated that an announcement regarding the India-US trade agreement will be made only when both nations reach a "fair, equitable and balanced" deal. He assured that "you will hear good news" once these conditions are met. The minister stressed that India's commitments should not compromise key domestic sectors, particularly farmers and fishermen.

'Good News' On India-US Deal Coming Soon? Min Piyush Goyal Hints AT Trade Pact

India and the US have been in talks about this bilateral trade pact since March, having completed six rounds of negotiations. Goyal highlighted that negotiations are intricate, requiring careful consideration of the concerns of farmers, fishermen, and small industries. He reiterated at the Indo-US Economic Summit that a fair agreement would soon bring positive news.

Focus on Strategic Advantage

Earlier this month, Goyal advised focusing on the strategic advantages India could gain rather than the scale of US tariffs. "Every agreement stands on comparative advantage to other nations," he remarked. The emphasis should be on what competitive edge India can secure over its rivals rather than just tariff amounts.

The United States currently imposes a 50% tariff on Indian exports, which includes a 25% penalty related to India's energy purchases from Russia. Both countries aim to finalise a bilateral trade agreement (BTA), with the first phase expected to conclude shortly.

Ambitious Trade Goals

Goyal noted that tariffs are paid by Americans, not Indians. The goal is to secure an advantage that enhances India's trade prospects. India aims to double its goods and services trade with the US to $500 billion by 2030, aligning with a broader ambition of achieving $2 trillion in global trade.

The minister emphasised that the size of the trade pact is not the main issue. "I don't think it's a question about big or small; it's about our national interest," he said. India is ready to sign any deal that is fair and equitable.

Progress in Global Trade Discussions

According to Goyal, several ongoing trade discussions are nearing completion. "I think we are at an advanced stage of discussions, both with the European Union and the US," he mentioned. He also noted potential agreements with Oman and New Zealand soon, while Chile is eager to finalise its pact as well.

"So I think almost all these five FTAs would run parallelly," he added, expressing optimism about progress being made across these negotiations. Goyal highlighted India's ambition to negotiate on equal terms with developed economies as it works towards Viksit Bharat 2047.

The minister's comments reflect India's determination to play a significant role in global economic progress while safeguarding its domestic interests. As discussions continue, both countries strive for an agreement beneficial for their respective economies.
