Historical Significance of Akshaya Tritiya

During the period of Pandava's exile, the five Pandavas were famished due to the lack of food and their wife, Draupadi was pained to see this as she could not extend the customary hospitality to their visiting guests. Hence Yudhishtira, the eldest of Pandava Princes prayed to Lord Surya, who gave him the Akshaya Patra bowl and was blessed that it would remain full till Draupadi served all their guests.

During Saint Durvasa's visit, Lord Krishna made this bowl invincible to Draupadi and hence the magical bowl - Akshaya Patra will always remain full of the food of their choice. If required, the bowl will satisfy the whole universe.

Hindus believe that Lord Parashurama, the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu took birth on Akshaya Tritiya and hence the day is also observed, as Parasurama Jayanti.

As per Hindu Mythology, Sage Vyasa began reciting the Hindu epic of Mahabharata to Lord Ganesha on Akshaya Tritiya. Another story states that the sacred river Ganga descended to earth on this day.
