50% Tariffs on India: Retaliation for Modi Snubbing Trump’s Nobel Ambitions?
The US imposed new tariffs on India following PM Modi's refusal to credit Trump for resolving tensions with Pakistan. This development highlights the strained diplomatic relations and ongoing trade negotiations between the two nations.
A recent report suggests that the new 50% tariffs imposed by the US on India might be a response to PM Narendra Modi's refusal to credit Donald Trump for ending military tensions with Pakistan. During a phone conversation in June, Trump allegedly sought an endorsement for a Nobel Peace Prize, which Modi declined.
In May, India and Pakistan were embroiled in conflict after India initiated Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting terror bases in Pakistan following the Pahalgam attack. The military confrontation lasted four days before India declared a ceasefire after discussions between the two armies.

Trump's Nobel Peace Prize Ambitions
Donald Trump has consistently claimed responsibility for resolving the hostilities between India and Pakistan. According to a New York Times report, he reiterated these claims during a call with PM Modi on June 17, subtly suggesting that India should nominate him for the Nobel Peace Prize. However, the White House did not acknowledge this call, nor did Trump mention it on social media.
Despite Trump's assertions, PM Modi reportedly countered during their conversation that the ceasefire was negotiated directly between New Delhi and Islamabad without US intervention. Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri later confirmed that Modi informed Trump there were no talks involving US mediation during the conflict.
Tariffs and Trade Tensions
Following Modi's dismissal of Trump's role in resolving the conflict, Washington surprised New Delhi by announcing a 25% tariff just weeks after their June 17 conversation. This was compounded by another 25% penalty related to India's purchase of discounted Russian oil. These actions further strained bilateral relations amid ongoing trade agreement discussions.
Despite Modi's stance, Trump dismissed his comments and continued to highlight his own involvement, even pointing out that Pakistan intended to nominate him for the Nobel Prize. This suggestion reportedly added tension to their relationship.
Reciprocal or Retaliatory?
The tariffs imposed by the US have been perceived as retaliatory measures against India's stance on Trump's involvement in the ceasefire. These duties have exacerbated existing tensions between the two nations as they continue negotiations on trade agreements.
Meanwhile, Trump has publicly maintained his belief that he deserves recognition for halting conflicts globally, including what he claims was a US-mediated resolution between India and Pakistan. "I won't get a Nobel Peace Prize no matter what I do," he posted in June.
The strained relations between India and the US highlight ongoing challenges in diplomatic ties and trade negotiations. The situation underscores how political dynamics can influence economic decisions and international relationships.
