Maharashtra CM Fadnavis, Adani Group’s Jeet Adani Review Progress of Navi Mumbai International Airport Project
Devendra Fadnavis and Jeet Adani inspected the Navi Mumbai International Airport, emphasising its role in decongesting air traffic and boosting Maharashtra's economy. The project aims to handle over 60 million passengers annually.
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, along with Adani Group’s Jeet Adani, conducted an on-ground inspection of the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport on Friday, underscoring the government’s commitment to fast-tracking one of India’s most ambitious infrastructure projects.

The Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), developed by Adani Airport Holdings Ltd (AAHL), is poised to become a second aviation hub for Mumbai and is expected to significantly decongest the existing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA). During the site visit, Fadnavis reviewed the project’s current status and emphasized timely completion, given its critical importance to Maharashtra’s economy and India's growing air traffic needs.
"PM Modi’s vision of infrastructure-led growth is being translated into reality through world-class projects like this. Navi Mumbai Airport will not only ease passenger flow but also catalyze economic activity in this region," Fadnavis said after the inspection. He was accompanied by senior officials from the Maharashtra government, CIDCO (City and Industrial Development Corporation), and the Adani Group.
Jeet Adani, Vice President of the Adani Group and a key leader in the group’s airport infrastructure business, provided a detailed walkthrough of the site. He reiterated the group's commitment to delivering the project in line with global benchmarks, both in terms of design and sustainability. "We are building this airport not just for today, but for the future of India’s aviation and logistics ecosystem," Jeet Adani stated.
The NMIA project, which spans over 1,160 hectares, is being developed in multiple phases and is expected to handle over 60 million passengers annually once fully operational. The first phase aims to accommodate up to 20 million passengers per year and is expected to be completed by December 2024.
CIDCO, the nodal agency for the project, has already completed significant groundwork, including land acquisition, rehabilitation of displaced communities, and utility shifting. Runway work, terminal construction, and connectivity infrastructure — including link roads and metro corridors — are being executed in close coordination with the state government and private partners.
During the visit, Fadnavis also highlighted the strategic positioning of NMIA, noting its proximity to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), India's largest container port. "This airport will serve as a crucial multimodal logistics hub, connecting air, sea, road, and rail freight corridors," he noted.
The Adani Group currently operates seven airports across India and has rapidly expanded its presence in the aviation infrastructure sector since acquiring a majority stake in Mumbai International Airport Ltd. NMIA is being seen as a flagship addition to this portfolio, showcasing the group's growing influence in urban mobility and logistics.
As construction picks up pace, stakeholders expect the Navi Mumbai airport to generate tens of thousands of jobs and unlock immense investment potential for Maharashtra’s MMR (Mumbai Metropolitan Region), transforming Navi Mumbai into a modern urban and commercial nucleus.
