What is a Pollution Under Control (PUC) Certificate?

A Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate is an official document certifying that a vehicle's emissions comply with government-prescribed limits. It is mandatory for all petrol, diesel, CNG and LPG vehicles. The certificate is issued only after a vehicle passes an emissions test conducted at an authorised testing centre.

This test measures pollutants such as carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and nitrogen oxides to ensure the vehicle is not excessively polluting the environment. Typically, the PUC certificate is valid for six months, while new vehicles may receive a certificate valid for one year.

Maintaining a valid PUC certificate is a crucial legal compliance under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, aimed at improving air quality and preventing penalties.

How to Obtain a PUC Certificate in Offline Method; Check PUC Certificate Fee

Vehicle owners can get their PUC certificates by visiting the nearest authorised emission testing centre or fuel station with PUC testing facilities. At the centre, an operator inserts a device into the vehicle's exhaust pipe to measure emission levels. If emissions are within permissible limits, the operator issues the PUC certificate after payment of a fee, usually between Rs 60 and Rs 100.

Renewing Your PUC Certificate

To renew a PUC certificate, vehicle owners must take their vehicle for a fresh emission test at an authorised centre. A new certificate is issued upon passing the test. Driving without a valid or with an expired PUC certificate can attract fines starting at Rs 1,000.
