Worried About Wrong UPI Payment? Here’s How You Can Raise A Complaint With RBI
The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has transformed the way Indians send and receive money, making it one of the most popular and convenient payment methods in the country. However, the ease of use comes with a risk. A single mistyped number or hurried tap can send payments to the wrong recipient, often leaving users confused and worried about how to recover their money.

What Is A Wrong UPI Transaction?
A wrong UPI transaction happens when money is sent to the wrong person or account by mistake. This can occur if the sender enters an incorrect UPI ID or mobile number, chooses the wrong contact, or responds to a fake or misleading payment request. Technical errors can also sometimes lead to such issues.
According to RBI guidelines, it is the responsibility of the sender to carefully enter the correct payment details to avoid sending money to the wrong account.
If a wrong UPI payment is made, it is important to file a complaint immediately. Reporting the issue quickly improves the chances of getting the money back. Users can raise a complaint with the payment service provider through which the transaction was made.
If the issue is not resolved, RBI rules allow users to escalate the complaint to the bank and, if needed, approach the RBI Ombudsman for further assistance.
How To Reverse A Wrong UPI Payment?
If you make a wrong UPI payment, it is advised to immediately report the issue within 24 to 48 hours to improve the chances of recovery.
Report Wrong UPI Payment Via UPI App
Most UPI apps such as Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm and BHIM offer a "Help" or "Report a Problem" option within the app. To raise a complaint, open the app and select the specific transaction where the error occurred. Then choose the option to "Raise a complaint" or "Report an issue" and select "Wrong UPI transaction" as the problem. Finally, submit the required details such as the transaction ID, date and amount to complete the complaint process.
Report Wrong UPI Payment To Bank
If you make a wrong UPI payment, contact your bank's customer support immediately or visit the nearest branch to register a complaint. While filing the complaint, mention the details such as UPI transaction ID, beneficiary's UPI ID or bank account number, and date and time of the transaction.
Call Wrong UPI Transaction Complaint Number
You can also report a wrong UPI transaction by calling the NPCI toll-free helpline number 1800-120-1740 as soon as the transaction is made.
Use NPCI Portal
If the issue is not resolved within 30 days, you can file a complaint on the NPCI portal. You will need to provide the transaction ID related to the wrong UPI payment. Make sure to note down the complaint reference number for tracking purposes.
Escalate The Issue To RBI Ombudsman
If your complaint still remains unresolved even after approaching the bank or UPI app, you can escalate the matter to the RBI Ombudsman through the RBI CMS portal.
