SGBs Deliver 360% Gains: Here’s How to Invest in Sovereign Gold Bonds Even After They Have Been Discontinued
SGB Investment: Sovereign Gold Bond (SGB) schemes are delivering whopping returns to investors. The Reserve Bank of India had fixed Thursday, November 6, as the final maturity date for SGB 2017-18 Series VI. As per the RBI release, the first issuance of the series took place on November 6, 2017.
The mentioned SGB will give around 300% returns to investors who purchased the scheme back in 2017. While SGB schemes' maturity amount has often raised interest among investors, there is no scope for fresh subscriptions as the government has discontinued SGB schemes as of now.

What Is A Sovereign Gold Bond Scheme?
SGBs are issued by the central government as securities denominated in grams of gold. SGBs are basically substitutes for holding physical gold. Investors can pay the price in cash and the bonds will be redeemed in cash or on maturity. The RBI issues these SGBs on behalf of the government of India.
Can You Subscribe Fresh SGB Schemes?
Investors can not purchase or subscribe to fresh SGB schemes as they have been discontinued. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman confirmed the discontinuation of the SGB schemes during a post-budget briefing for the Union Budget-2025.
How To Invest In SGB Schemes?
While subscription to fresh SGB schemes is not possible, but investors can invest in SGB schemes via secondary markets like NSE and BSE. These bonds can be purchased through the BSE or NSE at any time. When buying online, there's a discount of Rs.50 off the nominal price.
How To Buy SGB Schemes?
-It is important for investors to have a demat account. Investors can purchase SGB units via net banking as well. Here's how to do that:
-Login to our net banking account.
-Navigate to the 'eServices' section and select 'Sovereign Gold Bond'
-Read all the terms and conditions carefully then click on 'Proceed'.
-Complete the registration form and hit 'Submit'. Next, specify the subscription quantity and nominee details in the purchase form before submitting it.
Can You Invest In SGBs Via Broking Platforms?
People can also invest in SGBs via broking platforms like Groww, Zerodha, Angel One, etc.
-Login to one of the platforms.
-Use the search option and type 'SGB'. You will get all the SGB schemes available for investment.
-Click on the 'Buy' option if you wish to invest in the SGB scheme of your choice by reviewing its maturity date, price movement and other details.
Who Can Purchase SGB?
The Reserve Bank of India permits various entities to invest in sovereign gold bonds. Eligible investors include resident individuals of India, Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs), individuals subscribing on behalf of minors, charitable organisations, trusts, universities, and joint holders.
Who Can't Invest In SGBs?
Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs), Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs), private limited companies, firms, and Limited Liability Partnerships (LLPs) cannot purchase sovereign gold bonds.
