What is a Record date and its importance?
A record date is a cut-off date set by the companies to make note of the shareholders who are eligible to receive a dividend or distribution. Announcing a record date is required as it helps in finding out who exactly is the company's shareholder as of that particular date since shareholders of an actively traded stock are continually changing ownerships. So, the names of the shareholders that get recorded as of the cut-off date will be entitled to receive the dividend or distribution
Being aware of the record date is important because of its relation to another key date, the ex-dividend date. On and after the ex-dividend date, a buyer of the stock will not receive the dividend as the seller is entitled to it. A company's record date is a key concept to understand before buying and selling dividend stocks. The ex-dividend date is set exactly one business day before the dividend record date usually.
