India-EU Partnership Strengthens as Safe Investment Amid Global Trade and Migration Challenges

The relationship between the European Union (EU) and India is strengthening, according to EU Ambassador to India, Hervé Delphin. He noted that both parties see each other as secure investments amidst global challenges where trade, technology, migration, and information are being used strategically. Delphin highlighted this during an interactive session organised by the Ananta Centre.

Delphin emphasised the EU's unique nature, even for Europeans, as a collective force in today's world. He mentioned that major global powers like Russia, China, and the US focus on the EU, which signifies its importance. "They may deride us, may challenge us, may undermine us, but it means that we matter," he stated.

EU-India Partnership: A Strategic Alliance

The EU and India are committed to rule-based approaches and finding solutions to global issues such as artificial intelligence and biodiversity. This partnership has grown organically with over 50 areas of dialogue and cooperation. Delphin stressed that this collaboration delivers mutual benefits not only for both parties but also globally.

He described the recent visit of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to India as a significant political gesture. It reinforced trust and highlighted the need for increased investment in their partnership. Delphin remarked on von der Leyen's keynote address during the visit, noting her emphasis on the partnership's global significance.

Geopolitical Dynamics and Economic Opportunities

Delphin pointed out that the current geopolitical and geo-economic environment is conducive to a strong strategic partnership between the EU and India. He noted untapped potential in their relationship and suggested it might be time to realise these opportunities. The ASEAN Regional Forum was mentioned as a platform for boosting trade and connectivity.

The EU recently concluded free trade agreements (FTAs) with Singapore and Vietnam and reached a political agreement with Indonesia for a comprehensive economic partnership. Delphin expressed optimism about these developments, stating that the EU's strategic value is rising.

Challenges and Resilience

Brexit posed challenges for the EU, described by Delphin as a negative-sum game. He acknowledged difficulties in navigating relationships during Trump's presidency but noted that the EU managed to overcome these crises. Delphin asserted that despite being written off at times, the EU remains a collective force.

He spoke about the EU's journey towards increasing resilience and strategic autonomy. The EU aims to defend its democracy while maintaining openness without becoming vulnerable. "We don't want this interdependence being weaponised against us," Delphin underlined.

The ambassador concluded by highlighting the importance of seizing current opportunities for strategic partnerships. He reiterated that both the EU and India stand to benefit significantly from their growing relationship in today's turbulent times.
