What’s Open and Closed on Juneteenth 2025 in the U.S.? A Look at Markets, Banks & Government Offices

The U.S. stock markets will be closed on Thursday, June 19, 2025, due to Juneteenth National Independence Day, which became a federal holiday in 2021. Both the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the Nasdaq will remain closed throughout the day and resume normal operations on Friday, June 20.

Most federal offices and post offices will be closed on Juneteenth, as the day honors an important moment in the nation's history toward freedom and justice. Since becoming a federal holiday, Juneteenth has gained more recognition across the country and is part of a growing effort to celebrate diverse historical events.

Bond markets will also close, following the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA) guidelines. International markets such as London, Paris, Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Tokyo will operate on regular schedules.

What Is Juneteenth?

Juneteent remembers June 19, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger and 2,000 soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce that over 250,000 enslaved African Americans were free. This happened more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863.

Many people see Juneteenth as the true end of slavery in the U.S., and it's often called "America's Second Independence Day." Although Juneteenth celebrations have existed in Black communities for generations, the day became a federal holiday in 2021 after Former President Joe Biden signed legislation on the holiday.

Federal Offices and Banks Will Be Closed?

Yes. Non-essential federal government offices will be closed on Thursday, June 19, 2025. Federal employees will have a paid day off.

However, closure policies at the state and local level vary. Some state and city offices may remain open, especially in places like Florida, which observes but does not officially recognize Juneteenth as a state holiday. Some cities and counties may choose to close offices individually.

Also, most banks will be closed as Juneteenth is a Federal Reserve holiday. Online banking and ATMs will still be available, but any transactions made on June 19 may not process until the next business day.

Will Postal Services & Mail Be Delivered?

The U.S. Postal Service will suspend regular mail delivery and retail services for the day. Only Priority Mail Express will be delivered.

UPS and FedEx will continue normal pickup and delivery operations, and their stores will remain open.

What About Schools and Local Services?

Public schools are typically closed only if their district observes Juneteenth. Similarly, local government services like city halls or courts may be closed depending on local decisions.

Plan Ahead:

With many public services closed and financial transactions delayed, it's wise to plan ahead. Juneteenth falls near the end of the second financial quarter, a time when businesses often handle key transactions.

The next U.S. stock market holiday after Juneteenth is Independence Day (Friday, July 4, 2025).
