US Supreme Court's Ruling on Trump Tariffs: Check Date, Time of Hearing; How Verdict Will Impact India & Globe

The Supreme Court of the United States of America (USA) is set to deliver a landmark ruling on President Donald Trump's global tariff plan, a decision that could reshape both international trade rules and the scope of presidential powers. Among the countries most exposed to potential changes is India, currently facing combined duties of up to 50 per cent.

US Supreme Court's Ruling on Trump Tariffs: Check Date & Time of Hearing

The court will release a batch of rulings on 20 January at 10:00 am EST (8:30 pm IST), including cases on the Voting Rights Act, Colorado's "conversion therapy" regulations and free speech disputes.

US Supreme Court s Ruling on Trump Tariffs

The legal dispute centres on whether Trump can continue to rely on emergency powers under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to impose wide-ranging tariffs on multiple nations.

IEEPA, enacted in 1977, allows presidents to act in response to national emergencies involving foreign threats. The Supreme Court's ruling will determine whether the law permits a president to declare emergencies and apply sweeping tariffs globally, clarifying the legal limits of presidential trade powers for the future.

US Supreme Court's Verdict on Trump Tariffs: Impact on India and Global Tariffs

India is among the countries most exposed under Trump's current framework, facing total duties of 50 percent, which include both reciprocal measures and an additional 25 percent tariff linked to India's purchases of Russian oil. The court's decision could confirm, modify or overturn these tariffs.

Other nations, particularly in Europe, are also at risk. Trump has threatened fresh duties on several European allies, linking some measures to disputes over Greenland's strategic future. France has strongly criticised the administration's reasoning, arguing that national security claims do not justify such broad trade penalties.

US Supreme Court Tariffs Verdict: White House Plans If Powers Are Curbed

The US administration has indicated it is prepared for any outcome. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer stated that even if the court limits emergency-based powers, the White House has alternative legal avenues to maintain tariffs as a central component of US trade policy.

Greer told The New York Times on 15 January that multiple options have been offered to ensure duties remain in place. The administration plans to act immediately should the court strike down the existing framework, meaning global exporters, including Indian companies, could face new levies almost immediately after the ruling.

Stock Market Reactions and European Tensions

Financial markets have already responded to renewed tariff threats. Wall Street futures fell by up to 1.5 percent, while the US dollar slipped to a one-week low. Equities, government bonds, and company stocks-including Netflix, Johnson & Johnson and Intel-experienced selling pressure ahead of the Supreme Court ruling.

200% Trump Tariff on France

Tensions with France have escalated, with Trump threatening a 200 percent tariff on French wine and champagne after French President Emmanuel Macron declined to participate in Trump's proposed "Board of Peace" initiative. Other European nations may also face tariff scrutiny over Greenland, which US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent described as critical to American security.
