Traders in Sadar Bazaar Initiate Campaign to Promote Swadeshi Goods Following PM Modi's Appeal

In response to Prime Minister Modi's Independence Day appeal, traders in Sadar Bazaar have begun a campaign to promote swadeshi goods. Over 15 shops are displaying posters to encourage the sale of local products ahead of the festive season.

Traders in Sadar Bazaar have begun displaying posters stating "swadeshi products available" after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Independence Day appeal to promote local goods. Paramjit Singh Pamma, chairperson of the Federation of Sadar Bazaar Traders Association (FESTA), mentioned that over 15 shops have already put up these posters, indicating their commitment to selling Indian-made items.

Pamma explained that their association is actively visiting shops to encourage them to stock and sell swadeshi products. The campaign aims to ensure that only Indian goods are sold during the upcoming festive season. He also noted that the prime minister promised a GST revision on certain goods by Diwali, which could make swadeshi products more affordable compared to foreign ones.

The association plans to extend this initiative to all 40,000 shops in Sadar Bazaar. Pamma expressed confidence in reaching out to each shop under this campaign. Meanwhile, Sanjai Bhargaw, president of the Chandni Chowk Traders Association, highlighted that most shopkeepers in their market already deal primarily in Indian fabrics.

Focus on Self-Reliance

Bhargaw added that they have started placing stickers with "Swadeshi Saman" at their shops. This aligns with Modi's Independence Day speech, where he urged traders to declare their support for Indian products. The prime minister's message emphasized self-reliance, or "aatmanirbharta," amidst global challenges like US protectionism.

The backdrop of this initiative includes rising tensions between India and the US. President Donald Trump recently increased tariffs on Indian goods to 50 per cent, impacting trade relations. Modi's call for promoting swadeshi products comes at a crucial time for India's economy.

The emphasis on swadeshi products is part of a broader strategy to boost local industries and reduce dependency on imports. By encouraging traders to focus on Indian-made goods, the government aims to strengthen domestic manufacturing and support local businesses.

The campaign's success depends on widespread participation from traders across various markets. As more shopkeepers join the initiative, it could lead to a significant shift towards promoting Indian products nationwide. This movement not only supports local economies but also fosters a sense of national pride among consumers.

Ultimately, the push for swadeshi products reflects India's broader economic goals. By prioritising self-reliance and local production, the country seeks to navigate global economic challenges while strengthening its domestic market.
