A rare total lunar eclipse, also known as a Blood Moon, will occur on the night of the 7th and 8th of September. This Chandra Grahan 2025 will be fully visible in India and in most parts of Asia, Australia, eastern Africa, and Europe. According to an announcement by the Indian Meteorological Department, the lunar eclipse in India will begin on Sunday, September 7th and continue into the early hours of Monday, September 8th.

  • Penumbral eclipse begins: 8:58 PM India Standard Time on Sept 7
  • Total lunar eclipse begins: 11:00 PM India Standard Time on Sept 7

The maximum eclipse, where the Blood Moon will be at its peak, can be seen at 11:42 PM India Standard Time on Sept 7. The total eclipse ends at 12:22 AM India Standard Time on Sept 8.

Visibility of Lunar Eclipse 2025 in India

The total lunar eclipse in September 2025 in India will be visible across all states and cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Lucknow, Patna, and Jaipur. Viewers will be able to see all phases of the lunar eclipse, from penumbral to partial and the full Blood Moon eclipse.

For the best view, people should choose open areas, rooftops, terraces, or parks. Unlike solar eclipses, a lunar eclipse is safe to view without protective glasses. People can also use binoculars or telescopes for a better & closer look at the surface of the Moon during the Blood Moon phase.

What is a Blood Moon?

During a total lunar eclipse, the Earth passes directly between the Sun and the Moon. Instead of going completely dark, the Moon turns a deep red colour that is known as the Blood Moon effect.

This happens because of Rayleigh scattering, a phenomenon where the Earth's atmosphere filters sunlight, scattering blue light and allowing red light to pass through and illuminate the Moon. This Blood Moon of September 2025 is currently the talk of the town because of its long duration.

As per IMD, the last lunar eclipse which was visible from India was on 28th October, 2023, and it was a partial lunar eclipse. The next total lunar eclipse visible from India will occur on March 3, 2026.

Additionally, just weeks after the Blood Moon in September 2025, there will be a partial solar eclipse on September 21, 2025.
