Infosys founders Narayana and Sudha Murthy have opted out of Karnataka's socio-economic survey, stating it is irrelevant to them. The ongoing caste census faces challenges including coercion, logistical issues, and concerns about the lengthy questionnaire.

Infosys founder Narayana Murthy and author-philanthropist Sudha Murthy have opted out of Karnataka's socio-economic survey. They expressed that the census is irrelevant to them as they do not belong to any backward category. Their decision was communicated directly on the survey form provided by officials.

The Karnataka caste census, which is currently being conducted statewide, consists of 60 main questions and 20 sub-questions. These were formulated by the Karnataka State Commission for Backward Classes. However, the survey has encountered several issues since its inception in Bengaluru.

Challenges Faced by Survey Officials

Many residents have reported feeling coerced into participating in the census against their wishes. Teachers involved in the process have also voiced concerns about being overburdened. A resident from Hebbal, North Bengaluru, shared an experience where a teacher insisted on participation despite refusal, leading to threats of salary deductions or disciplinary action.

The socio-economic caste census aims to gather essential data for shaping social, educational, and political strategies in Karnataka. However, conducting such a large-scale, technology-driven census in a diverse city like Bengaluru has proven more challenging than expected.

Technical and Logistical Hurdles

Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar participated in the census on its first day in Bengaluru. He criticized the lengthy questionnaire and urged officials to simplify it, noting that urban residents lack patience for extensive surveys. "There are too many questions," Shivakumar remarked, emphasizing the need for brevity.

Statewide, 85.89% of houses have been surveyed; however, progress within Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) lags significantly at only 19.62%. Enumerators face logistical challenges and technical glitches alongside resistance from residents, complicating efforts to complete the survey within the planned 15-day timeframe.

The ongoing issues highlight the complexities involved in executing a comprehensive enumeration process across a sprawling urban landscape like Bengaluru. The state's ambitious plan faces hurdles that require addressing both technical and human factors to ensure successful completion.

The situation underscores the importance of balancing thorough data collection with practical considerations when implementing large-scale surveys in diverse environments. As authorities work towards resolving these challenges, they must consider simplifying processes to enhance cooperation and efficiency among participants and officials alike.
