Nifty and Sensex opened for a short duration for Diwali muhurat trading session on Tuesday. A day after Diwali Muhurat trading session marks closure of NSE and BSE on the occasion of Diwali 2025 and beginning of new Samvat.

Nifty and Sensex completed the Diwali Muhurat trading session on a positive note with Nifty surging nearly 25 points and Sensex closing 62 points higher. As we enter into Samvat 2082, will stock market open today, Wednesday, October 22.

Is Stock Market Open Today?

The Indian stock market, NSE and BSE will remain closed on Wednesday, October 22. As per BSE and NSE holiday calendar, it is a stock market holiday on the occasion of Balipratipada. It is a Hindu festival which is celebrated on the fourth day of Diwali. The occasion marks the return of the virtuous demon king Mahabali to Earth for one day. The festival also marks the victory of Lord Vishnu's Vamana avatar over Mahabali.

Stock market trading also remained closed on October 21 on the occasion of Diwali Laxmi Pujan. However, a one-hour Diwali Muhurat trading session was held in afternoon on Tuesday.

Diwali Muhurat Trading Session

The Indian stock market continued its decade-long trend of ending in green during the Diwali Muhurat trading session. The Indian stock market witnessed heightened volatility and surged significantly during the beginning of the session. Nifty 50 ended 25 points higher at 25,868 points, whereas Sensex ended 62 points higher at 84,426 points.

"The Indian stock market opened on a positive note during the Muhurat trading session, supported by upbeat global cues. Asian markets traded higher, while a strong overnight rally on Wall Street lifted investor sentiment. Extending its winning streak for the fourth consecutive session, Nifty closed higher in Samvat 2082's first session at 25,868.60, up 25.45 points or 0.10%. The Sensex also ended in the green, gaining 62.97 points or 0.07% to settle at 84,426.34. In the commodities market, however, precious metals witnessed mild profit-booking. On the MCX, gold prices fell by ₹271 or 0.21% to close at Rs 1,28,000 per 10 grams, while silver slipped Rs 327 or 0.22% to ₹1,50,000 per kg," explained Vikram Kasat, Head, Advisory, PL Capital.
