Other Stock Market Holiday in October

In October 2025, the Indian stock markets (NSE and BSE) will remain closed on three days.

October 2, Thursday, for Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti and Dussehra

The first holiday of the month, October 2, marks a dual significance. It is observed as Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti, celebrating the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation. The same day in 2025 also coincides with Dussehra or Vijayadashami, a major Hindu festival and the tenth day of the Navaratri. October 2nd is also a national holiday in India, during which markets remain closed.

October 21, Tuesday, for Diwali Laxmi Pujan

The second stock market holiday comes on Tuesday, October 21st, for Diwali Laxmi Pujan, when markets will remain closed for regular trading but will open for a special Muhurat Trading session.

October 22, Wednesday, for Diwali Balipratipada

On the following day, October 22 (Wednesday), markets will be closed again for Diwali Balipratipada, celebrated to honour the return of King Bali to Earth and observed as part of the extended Diwali festivities.

Except for these three holidays, markets will function as usual on all other days in October. These holiday schedules apply to both NSE and BSE.

Muhurat Trading 2025

Next month in October, other major stock market holidays include Diwali Laxmi Puja, which will be held on October 21st, 2025, when Muhurat Trading will be conducted.

Muhurat Trading is a special, auspicious one-hour trading session conducted on the occasion of Diwali, one of the major festivals in India. It marks the beginning of the new financial year as per the Hindu calendar, or Vikram Samvat. During this session, stock exchanges, NSE and BSE, open the market for a small time, allowing investors to make token trades believed to bring prosperity and good fortune for the year ahead. The tradition involves buying stocks as a token investment, often with a long-term perspective, and some traders also perform Lakshmi Puja before trading to seek blessings.

Unlike the usual evening timing, this year the session will be held in the afternoon from 1:45 PM to 2:45 PM, with pre-open and block deal sessions starting earlier in the afternoon. All trades executed in this session carry normal settlement obligations.

Tips for Investors During Stock Market Holiday

  • Avoid last-minute order submissions meant for October 2, as they won't be processed.
  • Be aware of T+1 or T+2 settlement cycles; the stock market holiday might push settlement dates.
  • With limited holidays, derivative expiry cycles which are held on Tuesdays/Thursdays remain unaffected.
