Stock Market Closing on September 2: The highly volatile Tuesday's trading session was marked by bullish momentum in the first half and bearish closing of the Nifty and Sensex on September 2. Nifty 50 touched an intraday high mark of 24,700 but failed to retain the gain.
BSE Sensex ended the day 206 points lower at 80,157.88 points. Nifty 50 concluded the session 45 points lower at 24,579.60 on Tuesday. Developments related to Goods and Services Tax (GST) proposal, US tariffs, and India-US trade deal impacted the stock market investors' sentiment today.

Nifty 50 ended Tuesday's trading session in the red, with nearly all the broad market indices trading in green. Nifty SmallCap 50, Nifty SmallCap 250 and even Nifty MicroCap 250 ended around 0.5% higher.
Nifty Bank continued to underperform on Tuesday and ended 0.63% lower at 53,661 points. Coming to thematic indices, Nifty FMCG, Nifty Metal, Nifty PSU Bank were up around 1.12%, 0.98%, 0.85%, respectively. Nifty Realty, and Nifty Oil & Gas thematic indices were also trading 0.72% and 0.62%.
The volatile session of Nifty and Sensex also coincided with the first Tuesday expiry under the new weekly derivatives settlement cycle. "The Sensex retreated sharply, slipping over 700 points from its intraday peak, as profit-taking in heavyweight banking and financial counters exerted downward pressure.
"Broader markets outperformed, with the Nifty Midcap and Smallcap indices ending in the green, reflecting continued rotational interest. Sectoral performance was mixed. Defensive buying in FMCG stocks led the Nifty FMCG index to close with a 1.1% gain, while Nifty Media and Nifty Energy advanced 0.99% each," noted Bajaj Broking Market in its report.

Several bank sector stocks like ICICI Bank, Kotak Bank, etc, were among the top losers of the day. Additionally, Mahindra & Mahindra, Tata Motors, Cipla, Trent, Grasim, etc, were also among the top laggards.

A host of themes dominated the Indian stock market on September 2, Tuesday including GST reforms buzz, US trade tensions and India-US Trade dea. The GST council meeting is all set to begin on Wednesday September 3. The Centre is reportedly planning to implement GST rate cut and also reduce existing GST slabs.
The implementation of GST rationalisation would significantly boost the consumption. This will hav a positive ripple effect across sectors including FMCG, automobile, cement, etc.
In another development, Union Minister Piyush Goyal on Tuesday said that India and US are discussing trade agreement to negotiate on US trade tariffs. US President Donald Trump-announced 50% tariffs came into effect on Indian items last week."India is in dialogue with the U.S. for a bilateral trade agreement," said Union Commerce & Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Tuesday.
