Solar Eclipse on August 2? When & Where Will It Visible in India? NASA Confirms Truth About This Surya Grahan!
Claims circulating on social media about a dramatic solar eclipse plunging Earth into darkness for six minutes on August 2, 2025, have caused widespread confusion. However, these claims are factually incorrect. According to NASA, while a rare and exceptionally long solar eclipse is indeed expected, it will not occur this year. The longest solar eclipse of the century is scheduled to happen on August 2, 2027, not in 2025 as rumored.
Longest Solar Eclipse in a Century to Occur in 2027
NASA has confirmed that the August 2, 2027 solar eclipse will be one of the longest total eclipses in 100 years, with a total darkness duration of approximately 6 minutes. This rare celestial event has not been witnessed for decades and will not occur again until 2114. The eclipse will be visible across parts of North Africa, the Middle East and southern Europe.

Solar Eclipse in 2025: Partial Eclipse on September 21
As for 2025, there will be no solar eclipse on August 2. Instead, the second and final solar eclipse of the year will occur on September 21, 2025. However, it will be a partial solar eclipse, and more importantly, it will not be visible in India.
According to astronomical data, the September 21 eclipse will begin at 10:59 PM IST and end at 3:23 AM IST on September 22. The maximum eclipse moment, also called the peak or middle period, will occur at 1:11 AM IST. The total duration of the event will be approximately 4 hours and 24 minutes.
Where Will the 2025 Eclipse Be Visible? Date and Time of Solar Eclipse in India
This eclipse will only be visible from parts of Australia, Indonesia, and select regions of the South Pacific Ocean. Since the phenomenon will not be visible in India, its Sutak period-the inauspicious window of time observed before an eclipse according to Hindu tradition-will not apply in the country.
Surya Grahan on Pitru Paksha: No Religious Impact in India
In Hinduism, the Sutak period is observed only when the eclipse is visible in a particular region. Therefore, no religious rituals or ceremonies will be halted in India during this solar eclipse. Interestingly, Pitru Paksha, a 16-day period dedicated to ancestors, will also conclude on this very date, September 21, but the eclipse holds no religious significance due to its invisibility from Indian soil.
What Is a Solar Eclipse?
A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, partially or fully blocking sunlight. It's a natural celestial event that varies in type-partial, total, or annular-depending on the alignment.
