The first auspicious fasting of Sawan Somvar commenced on July 14, 2025. This is a spiritual month for devotees who will worship Lord Shiva, also known as Mahadev, by fasting, chanting mantras and visiting temples. This month is one of the holiest for Hindus across the world, for divine intervention and enhancing growth in spirituality. Also, the fasting on sixteen Mondays of Sawan Somvar has many other perks, such as wish fulfillment, prosperity and health.

The dates for Shravan vary from state to state. As per Drik Panchang, the following are the key dates of Sola Somvar:

Here are some of the key factors to take note of while practising Sola Somvar:

Sola Somvar Fasting Rules:

Here are some of the key rules to be followed during Sola Somvar, as per Smart Puja:

- Starting on the first Monday of Shravan Month, observe a 16-day fast as part of the solah somvar puja vidhi.

- Get up early, take a bath, and put on clean clothing.

- Visit the Lord Shiva shrine in the area.

- Send up genuine prayers to Maa Parvati, Lord Ganesha, and Lord Shiva.

- Perform Rudraabhishek on the Shiva idol. Offer unbroken rice, Panchamrit, Chandan, fruit, and itra to the gods when conducting the rites.

- Before reciting the mantras 108 times, one can also give Lord Shiva Bel Phal, Bel Patra, and marijuana leaves.

- Recite the Solah Somvar Katha close to your house temple.

- Next, observe fast with a proper lunch or dinner or some fruits.

- Avoid eating frequently, or avoid consuming salty meals.

- Keep the fast for another 16 Mondays.

- Complete the entire puja on the 16th Monday and recall Lord Shiva in your prayers.

What to Eat in Sola Somvar Vrat?

As per Sanatana Journey, here is a list of foods that can be eaten during the 16 Somvar Vrat:

- You can consume milk, fresh vegetables, dishes made with sendha namak (rock salt), sabudana (sago), and dairy products like buttermilk and curd.

- Some devotees prefer eating only one meal a day. For them, fresh milk and fruits are essential.

- Exclude foods prepared with onions, garlic, or regular salt.

- Avoid mushrooms, tea, coffee, cola, energy drinks, and non-vegetarian items such as meat, fish, eggs, and alcohol.

- Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Adding nuts and dry fruits to your fasting meals provides essential nutrients and energy.

Sawan Somvar Do's and Don'ts:

According to Namoastro, devotees from different regions in India practise different rules during Sawan Somvar Vrat. Here are some commonly observed fasting rules:

- Abstain from consuming grains. It includes wheat, rice, and lentils

- Do not consume non-vegetarian food that is, meat, fish, eggs, etc.

- Consume only a Satvik (pure) diet, like - fruits, milk, yoghurt, nuts, and certain permitted vegetables.

- Have controlled meal timings

- Many devotees begin their fast at sunrise and conclude after sunset, and during this time they do not consume anything. They eat Satvik meals only after sunset

- Abstain from alcohol, tobacco and all other products that come under this category

- Abstain from consuming onion, garlic or anything that is Rajasik (elaborate rich and sumptuous meals) and Tamasik (non-vegetarian) in nature.

- Keep yourself hydrated during fasting. Consume freshly homemade fruit juices, water, coconut water and buttermilk. You can also drink tea.

- Use rock salt instead of table salt for cooking (if you take salt). Most devotees avoid all types of salts.

- Consume only freshly prepared homemade juices and homemade meals.

- Avoid packaged juices, as they contain taste enhancers and preservatives.
