Government Advocates for Tailored Corporate Social Responsibility Framework for Coal Sector
The government emphasises the need for a sector-specific corporate social responsibility framework for coal companies to promote sustainability and stakeholder engagement. This initiative aims to reduce environmental impact and enhance responsible practices in the industry.
The government has highlighted the importance of a corporate social responsibility (CSR) framework tailored for coal companies. This initiative aims to foster responsible practices, reduce environmental harm, and boost stakeholder engagement. The coal ministry noted the increasing involvement of private entities in the sector, necessitating a specific CSR framework for these companies.

Coal PSUs have developed their CSR policies based on the Companies Act, 2013, the Companies CSR Policy Rules, 2014, and guidelines from the Department of Public Enterprises (DPE). Over time, these public sector units have launched significant initiatives in health, education, environment, sanitation, and sports. The coal ministry recently held a consultation with stakeholders to discuss a CSR framework for Indian coal companies.
Focus on Local Needs and Collaboration
During the consultation, Coal Additional Secretary Rupinder Brar addressed participants from Coal India Ltd, NLC India Ltd, Singareni Collieries Company Ltd, and private coal firms. Brar urged these companies to align their CSR efforts with community welfare and business benefits by quantifying them to earn green credits. She stressed prioritising local needs when planning CSR activities.
Brar also emphasised the significance of engaging credible agencies for need and impact assessments. These assessments provide detailed analysis and insights necessary for impactful CSR activities. She encouraged collaboration among coal companies to share knowledge and resources effectively.
Sector-Specific CSR Framework
The coal ministry's statement underscored the necessity for a sector-specific CSR framework due to the growing presence of private players in the industry. Such a framework would guide both private and public sector coal companies in adopting sustainable practices. The aim is to ensure that these companies contribute positively to society while minimising their environmental footprint.
The consultation organised by the coal ministry brought together senior officials and representatives from various coal companies. This gathering aimed to deliberate on creating a comprehensive CSR framework that addresses the unique challenges and opportunities within the coal sector.
By focusing on local needs and fostering collaboration, the government hopes to enhance the effectiveness of CSR initiatives in the coal industry. The proposed framework is expected to serve as a guide for companies to implement responsible practices that benefit both communities and businesses.
