Schools Closed Today in Chennai, Chengalpattu & Several Other Distritcs in Tamil Nadu Amid Heavy Rain Alerts
Tamil Nadu is facing intense rainfall as a low-pressure system develops in the Bay of Bengal, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue red and orange alerts across multiple districts. The continuous downpour has disrupted normal life in several areas, leading to school and college closures in many parts of the state.
Schools and Colleges Closed Today in Chennai and Other Districts in Tamil Nadu
In response to the ongoing weather crisis, several district administrations have ordered the closure of schools and colleges on Wednesday. The announcement came following intense rainfall in Chennai and surrounding regions.

According to Rashmi Siddharth Zagade, District Collector of Chennai, schools in the city were closed for the day to ensure student safety. Similar announcements were made in the following districts:
- Chengalpattu
- Tiruvallur
- Villupuram
- Kallakurichi
- Cuddalore
- Thanjavur
- Tiruvarur
- Mayiladuthurai
These institutions were initially scheduled to reopen on Wednesday after the Diwali holidays. However, due to the worsening weather, plans were altered at the last moment.
Tamil Nadu State-Level Republic Day Sports Meet Postponed
Adding to the disruptions, the School Education Department has also postponed the state-level Republic Day sports meet, which was scheduled to be held from October 24 to 29 in Thanjavur. The decision comes amid concerns over the safety of students and participants due to persistent rainfall.
Red Alert in Tamil Nadu
On Wednesday, a red alert was issued for eight districts, warning of extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 204.4 mm in 24 hours. The affected districts include:
- Ramanathapuram
- Pudukkottai
- Thanjavur
- Tiruvarur
- Nagapattinam
- Mayiladuthurai
- Cuddalore
- Villupuram
In addition, the Union Territories of Puducherry and Karaikal have also been placed under red alert due to the high risk of flooding and waterlogging.
Orange Alerts in Several Districts
An orange alert, indicating the possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall, has been announced in twelve districts. These include:
- Chengalpattu
- Kallakurichi
- Perambalur
- Ariyalur
- Thoothukudi
- Tirunelveli
- Kanyakumari
- Ranipet
- Tiruvannamalai
- Thanjavur
- Tiruvarur
- Nagapattinam
The districts of Chennai, Kancheepuram, and Tiruvallur are also under orange alert for three consecutive days starting Tuesday, as per IMD forecasts.
Advisory for Residents
With red and orange alerts in place across large parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, residents are urged to:
- Stay indoors unless necessary
- Avoid waterlogged areas
- Follow updates from IMD and local authorities
- Be prepared for potential flash floods or landslides in affected districts
The IMD continues to monitor the weather system and has warned of further rainfall activity over the next 48 hours. Emergency services remain on high alert across vulnerable regions.
