School Holiday Today, September 8, 2025: Eid-e-Milad In Mumbai, Weather Shutdowns in Punjab, HP, J&K & More
Today, September 8, is observed as a school holiday across regions in India. While students in Mumbai and some northern states enjoy a day off, most schools in Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and Kerala remain open. The difference comes from the Eid-e-Milad public holiday, which got rescheduled, and weather-related school closures. Parents and students are advised to check with local authorities and schools for the latest updates.

School holiday in Mumbai for Eid-e-Milad
In Mumbai and suburban areas, schools are closed today as the Maharashtra government shifted the Eid-e-Milad holiday from September 5 to September 8. This change was made to avoid overlapping with the ongoing Ganesh Chaturthi festivities. Students in the financial capital are getting a long weekend, while offices remain open and there is no stock market holiday.
Schools Open in Delhi, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Other States
In other parts of India, like Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and Kerala, schools are functioning normally today. These states had already observed the Eid-e-Milad holiday on September 5th, so there is no additional school holiday on Monday.
Rain-Related School Closures in North India
Apart from festival holidays, heavy rains in Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, and Uttarakhand have forced some schools to shut down for safety reasons. District administrations in these regions have issued alerts, and in many areas, classes are being conducted online or rescheduled for student safety. Parents are urged to track official school circulars for real-time information.
Eid-e-Milad is a significant festival, but the holiday date varies by state depending on local government notifications and regional events. This year, Maharashtra chose September 8 for the holiday, while most other states celebrated Eid-e-Milad on September 5. At the same time, weather disruptions in northern India have added another layer of shutdowns in some districts.
