India Post has officially clarified that its long-standing Registered Post service is not being discontinued, contrary to viral social media rumours. Over the past few days, several misleading posts claimed that the service, which has existed for over 50 years would come to an end on September 1, 2025.
'Registered Post is NOT being discontinued'
The Department of Posts has now confirmed that these claims are false and that the service is being upgraded, not shut down. In a statement released on X (formerly Twitter), the Department of Posts explained that it has "rationalised its sorting infrastructure and unified the processing of both Registered and Speed Post items."
The move is part of a broader effort to modernise postal operations and streamline services under a more efficient system.
India Post also posted a message that read, "Now, send Registered Post with the speed of Speed Post - no compromise on trust, just quicker outcomes," emphasising that the service is evolving to become faster while maintaining its reliability. "We're modernising, not erasing," the post added, firmly denying any claims about discontinuation.
The Press Information Bureau (PIB) Fact Check also intervened, labelling the reports as fake and confirming that Registered Post will continue as usual. The clarification was welcomed by many, especially legal and government service users who frequently rely on Registered Post for secure, accountable deliveries.
What's Difference Between
?
To explain further, India Post clarified the difference between Registered and Speed Post services. Registered Post is addressee-specific, which means the item is handed over only to the named recipient or their authorised representative. Speed Post, on the other hand, is address-specific and can be delivered to any person available at the given address. After the integration, Speed Post and Speed Post parcels will continue as address-specific, but items booked as Speed Post with registration will follow the addressee-specific delivery rule, just like traditional Registered Post.
India Post's Premium Features
Additionally, India Post announced several premium features that customers can now enjoy under the unified service model. These include end-to-end online tracking, real-time delivery updates, OTP-based secure delivery, Cash on Delivery (COD) services, and credit facilities for business clients. These enhancements aim to deliver a faster, more transparent, and customer-friendly postal experience.
How to Send a Registered Post Through India Post: Step-by-Step Guide
Sending a Registered Post through India Post is a simple and secure process, designed for those who want proof of mailing, delivery, and enhanced accountability. Here's how you can do it:
Start by preparing your document or parcel securely in an envelope or small package. Ensure it is properly sealed and labeled with a clear name and address of the recipient. If the delivery needs to be addressee-specific, make a note of that on the envelope or inform the counter clerk.
Next, visit your nearest India Post office. Once there, go to the counter and inform the staff that you want to send a Registered Post. They will provide you with a Registered Post slip or consignment form, which you need to fill in with the sender's and recipient's details.
After filling the form, hand over the item at the counter. The staff will weigh your parcel and calculate the postal charges based on weight, destination, and any additional services like acknowledgement receipt (AR), insurance, or registration with Speed Post if you want faster, trackable delivery.
Once payment is made, you will receive a receipt with a tracking number (also known as the consignment number). Keep this safe, as it allows you to track your Registered Post online through the India Post website or mobile app.
Delivery typically takes between 2 to 7 working days, depending on the destination. If you opted for addressee, only delivery or tracking features, you can monitor every step of the delivery process.
Registered Post ensures proof of dispatch, safe handling and delivery confirmation, making it ideal for sending important documents such as legal papers, tenders, agreements, or ID proofs.
