Prada Announces Plans for Limited-Edition Kolhapuri-Inspired Collection with Local Artisans
Prada, the renowned Italian fashion house, has announced plans to introduce a collection inspired by Kolhapuri sandals. This initiative will involve collaboration with local artisans, as confirmed by the Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture (MACCIA). A team of technical experts from Prada is scheduled to visit India next week to identify potential local supply chain partners for this venture.

MACCIA revealed that Prada aims to launch a limited-edition Kolhapuri-inspired collection made in India. This follows a recent fashion show where Prada's use of Kolhapuri sandals sparked debate about the recognition of Indian artisans' contributions by international brands. The chamber's president, Lalit Gandhi, mentioned that the visiting team will assess production facilities and ensure they meet Prada's standards.
Prada's Commitment to Local Artisans
During a virtual meeting with MACCIA, several Prada officials, including Roberto Massardi and Lorenzo Bertelli, discussed their commitment to acknowledging Kolhapuri sandals in all publications. They also assured that the collection would only be commercialised after fulfilling geographical indication requirements. This move highlights Prada's dedication to respecting cultural heritage and legal standards.
Prada shared its initial vision for the Made-in-India Kolhapuri collection, drawing parallels with previous successful collaborations in Peru, Japan, and Scotland. The chamber urged Prada to consider expanding this collaboration to include other traditional crafts like Paithani weaving and Himroo textiles. Prada responded positively, expressing interest in exploring these crafts for future collections.
Expanding Collaborative Opportunities
MACCIA has proposed that Prada establish an excellence lab in Maharashtra. This facility would focus on identifying and sourcing local crafts, helping them gain access to premium global markets. Such an initiative could significantly boost the visibility and value of Indian artisanal products worldwide.
The meeting included four representatives from Kolhapur who are closely linked with the chappal industry, alongside MACCIA officials. Their involvement underscores the importance of local expertise in ensuring the project's success and authenticity.
This collaboration between Prada and Indian artisans represents a significant opportunity for cultural exchange and economic growth. By integrating traditional crafts into high-fashion collections, both parties stand to benefit from increased recognition and market reach.
