Parsi New Year History: Navroj Significance

The origins of the Parsi New Year, or Navroz, can be traced back over 3,500 years to the time of Prophet Zarathustra, the founder of Zoroastrianism-one of the world's oldest known monotheistic religions. Zoroastrianism emphasized the worship of one supreme god, Ahura Mazda, and introduced spiritual principles like good thoughts, good words, and good deeds, which continue to shape the community's values even today.

Zoroastrianism was once the official religion of the Persian Empire (modern-day Iran), and it flourished from around 650 BCE until the 7th century CE, when Islam began to spread rapidly across the region. Following the Islamic conquest of Persia, many Zoroastrians faced religious persecution. To preserve their faith and way of life, a large number of them migrated-particularly to the west coast of India, including Gujarat and Maharashtra.

This group eventually came to be known as the Parsis in India. Their arrival marked the beginning of a rich and peaceful coexistence with Indian culture, where they continue to celebrate Navroz with great devotion and enthusiasm each year.
