Orange Alert For Chennai Weather Today: Schools Closed on 4 Dec as Heavy Rain Continues; IMD Issues Warning
Due to consistent heavy rainfall because of cyclone Ditwah that has gripped the entire state of Tamil Nadu, all schools in Chennai and the districts affected by the heavy rain will remain closed on Thursday, 4 December.
The Chennai weather today experienced intense showers with waterlogging, and thunderstorm activity was reported since early morning. However, colleges in Chennai will function as usual, as no blanket closure has been issued for higher education institutions.

Local authorities declared a rain holiday for students as multiple low-lying neighbourhoods in South Chennai are experiencing water stagnation, with corporation teams deploying pumps to clear accumulated water and maintain road access. Officials have urged residents to remain cautious while travelling, especially in areas prone to flooding, slippery roads, and poor visibility.
Chennai Weather Alert: IMD Warns of Thunderstorm, Lightning & Heavy Rain
According to a Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) Chennai bulletin issued at 7:00 AM on 4 December, the following weather conditions have been forecast:
Up to 10:00 AM, December 4, light to moderate rain with thunderstorms and lightning is very likely. Affected districts include Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu.
Because of the worsening weather in Chennai today, waterlogging, slippery roads, and possible traffic disruptions could be seen. Later in the day, IMD predicts light rain with thunderstorms and lightning.
Affected districts include Coimbatore, Erode, Kanniyakumari, Ramanathapuram, Tenkasi, The Nilgiris, Thoothukudi, and Tirunelveli.
The IMD has issued an orange alert for Chennai, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall till 5 December 2025. Officials may review whether schools need further holidays depending on rainfall intensity and updated cyclone movement.
School Holiday Status in Tamil Nadu
Due to the persistent heavy rain due to Cyclone Ditwah in Tamil Nadu, authorities have declared a school holiday in Chennai & Tiruvallur District. Other Tamil Nadu districts' schools remain open unless district collectors issue separate emergency announcements. Parents are advised to check updates via district administration notices and school websites for any weather-related holiday for school.
