NASA Layoffs: Over 2,000 Senior Employees to Exit from Several Teams Amid Budget Cuts & Leadership Crisis

At the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), approximately 2,145 senior-ranking employees are expected to leave the agency, according to a report published by Politico on Wednesday. The move is part of a wider effort to cut staff and reduce costs as the agency faces financial pressures and leadership uncertainty.

Citing internal documents, Politico reported that the bulk of those departing hold GS-13 to GS-15 roles, which are among the highest levels in the federal government's General Schedule pay scale. These positions typically involve senior leadership, technical, and scientific responsibilities, the very roles critical to NASA's complex and long-term space missions.

To reduce headcount while avoiding involuntary layoffs, NASA has reportedly offered voluntary early retirement packages, buyouts and the option for deferred resignations. The agency has not confirmed the final number of departures, but the scale of the exits could significantly impact ongoing and future missions.

"NASA remains committed to our mission as we work within a more prioritized budget," said Bethany Stevens, a spokesperson for the agency, in a statement to Reuters. She emphasised NASA's continued focus on its core goals despite the evolving budgetary landscape.

The cuts come during a turbulent period for NASA and the broader U.S. space industry. Under President Donald Trump's administration, the space agency has been grappling with proposed budget reductions that threaten to cancel numerous science programs. The 18,000-strong workforce has faced increasing uncertainty, as many programs-especially those focused on Earth science and climate research-have come under scrutiny.

Adding to the instability is the ongoing leadership vacuum at NASA. The agency has been without a confirmed administrator for several months, further complicating strategic decision-making. The Trump administration's nominee for NASA administrator, billionaire entrepreneur and private astronaut Jared Isaacman-a known ally of Elon Musk was abruptly withdrawn from consideration by the White House last month.
