The Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) is all set to begin operations on September 30. This is Mumbai's second international airport alongside Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. NMIA is expected to significantly enhance air travel for western India and also ease congestion at Mumbai's primary airport.

Mumbai's Second Airport NMIA Launching Sep 30: Flight Timings, Terminals & More

Located in Ulwe near Panvel, NMIA spans approximately 2,865 acres, larger than Mumbai's existing airport at Santacruz. The airport's Phase 1 will feature Terminal 1, capable of handling 20 million passengers annually, with plans to eventually expand to four terminals and two parallel runways, serving up to 90 million passengers per year.
The airport is designed with modern, sustainable infrastructure and improved connectivity through nearby roads, metro lines, and the upcoming Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), making it convenient for travellers from Mumbai and surrounding areas.

Airlines and Flight Operations

Two major airlines are confirmed to operate from NMIA at launch: IndiGo and Akasa Air.
As per reports, IndiGo plans to start with 18 daily flights connecting over 15 cities and will expand to 79 daily flights, including 14 international routes, by March 2026.

While Akasa Air will begin with approximately 100 weekly domestic flights, targeting a scale-up to 300+ domestic and 50+ international weekly flights by November 2026.

Travellers can expect flight schedules to be updated on airline websites and travel booking platforms as the launch date approaches. The airport's IATA code is 'NMI', which will be used for ticket bookings and travel planning.
By 2032, the combined capacity with CSMIA will match global multi-airport hubs like Dubai, London, and New York.

Navi Mumbai International Airport Inauguration

The inauguration of NMIA is likely to be conducted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi since it's an important event for Mumbai and India's aviation sector. However, no official announcements have been made yet. The new NMIA is expected to reduce overcrowding and improve travel experiences for millions of domestic and international passengers by diverting passenger traffic from Mumbai's main airport.

Advice for travellers

Passengers should monitor airline websites and travel portals for the latest flight schedules from NMIA. Initial operations will focus on domestic routes, gradually expanding to international flights in the coming months. Connectivity options such as taxi services, metro lines, and upcoming road links will make commuting to and from NMIA very easy and reduce travel time from South Mumbai.
