MHA Receives Rs 2.55 Lakh Crore in Union Budget 2026-27 with Significant Increase for Intelligence Bureau

The Union Budget for 2026-27 has allocated over Rs 2.55 lakh crore to the Ministry of Home Affairs, marking a 9.44% increase from the previous year's budget of Rs 2.33 lakh crore. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced that Rs 1.73 lakh crore, or about 68%, is designated for police-related expenses, including funding for the Intelligence Bureau and various Central Armed Police Forces.

The Intelligence Bureau (IB) has seen a significant budget increase, receiving Rs 6,782.43 crore in 2026-27, up by 63% from the previous allocation of Rs 4,159.1 crore. This increase reflects the government's focus on enhancing internal intelligence capabilities. The capital expenditure for the IB has also surged ninefold to Rs 2,549.54 crore, indicating substantial investment in its operations.

Police and Paramilitary Funding

Among the paramilitary forces, the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) received Rs 11,324.08 crore, marking a 14.7% increase over last year's revised estimates of Rs 9,868.85 crore. This includes Rs 225.80 crore for machinery and vehicles procurement. The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) was allocated Rs 38,517.9 crore, a rise of 3.39% from the previous budget.

The Border Security Force (BSF) received Rs 29,567.64 crore with minimal change from last year’s budget. The Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) was allocated Rs 10,984.51 crore, while the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) received Rs 15,973.85 crore and Assam Rifles got Rs 8,796.68 crore.

Delhi and Jammu & Kashmir Allocations

The Delhi Police's budget increased slightly to Rs 12,503.65 crore from Rs 12,405.70 crore in the previous year. The funds cover routine expenses and various schemes like traffic network development in NCR cities and communication infrastructure upgrades.

The Jammu and Kashmir Police received an allocation of Rs 9,925.50 crore, reflecting a 9.1% increase from last year’s budget to support administrative expenses and law enforcement activities in the region.

Union Territories and Infrastructure Projects

The Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir was allocated Rs 43,290.29 crore in this Budget, showing a nominal rise of 4.7% from last year’s revised estimates of Rs 41,340.22 crore. This includes contributions towards disaster response funds and power generation projects like Kiru HEP.

Funds for other Union Territories include Rs 6,680.94 crore for Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Rs 5,720.17 crore for Chandigarh among others. Additionally, Rs 5,576.51 crore is earmarked for border infrastructure management.

Additional Allocations

The Budget also sets aside Rs 6,000 crore for Census-related activities starting April 1st after delays due to COVID-19. Moreover, Rs 5,393.37 crore is allocated for police infrastructure projects across various regions.

A scheme focused on women's safety has been granted Rs 889.05 crore while prison modernisation receives Rs 300 crore and another Rs 350 crore goes towards the Vibrant Villages program.

Overall allocations reflect an emphasis on enhancing security infrastructure and modernising police forces across India while addressing regional needs through targeted funding initiatives.
