Spiritual Significance of Kartik Purnima

Kartik Purnima is considered one of the most auspicious full moon days (Purnimas) in Sanatan Dharma. It is believed that performing holy rituals on this day can cleanse one's sins, bring prosperity, and ensure spiritual growth.

According to ancient scriptures, on Kartik Purnima, deities descend to Earth to celebrate Dev Diwali, lighting lamps along the Ganga River. Devotees perform rituals for Lord Vishnu (Lakshmi Narayan) and Lord Shiva, seeking divine blessings for peace and prosperity.

Taking a dip in the Ganges at dawn-known as Kartik Snana-is regarded as especially auspicious. Those unable to travel to the holy river can purify themselves by bathing with Gangajal (holy water) at home.

Coinciding with Kartik Purnima is Guru Nanak Jayanti, also known as Prakash Utsav or Guru Purab, which celebrates the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism.

On this sacred day, Gurudwaras across the world are adorned with lights and flowers. Devotees participate in Akhand Path (continuous recitation of Guru Granth Sahib), sing Shabad Kirtan, and engage in Langar Sewa, the community kitchen that embodies equality and selfless service - key teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

Kartik Purnima Puja Vidhi (Rituals)

Devotees begin the day before sunrise by bathing in the Ganga or at home using Gangajal. Homes are cleaned and decorated, and a desi ghee diya is lit before Lord Vishnu's idol. Tulsi Patra (holy basil leaves) are offered, and Satyanarayan Puja is performed with devotion.

Traditional offerings include Panchamrit (a sacred mixture of milk, honey, ghee, curd, and sugar) and Panjeeri, which are prepared as Bhog (holy offering). Devotees then perform aarti, chant Vishnu mantras, and offer Arghya (water offering) to the Moon God, symbolizing gratitude and spiritual purification.

Mantras to Chant on Kartik Purnima

During the rituals, devotees chant sacred mantras to invoke divine blessings:

"Om Namo Narayanaya" - to worship Lord Vishnu

"Om Chandraaya Namah" - to offer prayers to the Moon God

"Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya" - for peace, prosperity, and salvation

Chanting these mantras with faith is believed to attract divine grace and purify the soul.

Dev Diwali 2025 Celebrations

In Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, Kartik Purnima marks the grand celebration of Dev Diwali, when the Ghats of the Ganges come alive with millions of diyas (oil lamps). This spectacular event symbolizes the victory of Lord Shiva over the demon Tripurasura.

Thousands of devotees gather at the Dashashwamedh Ghat and other riverbanks to perform Deep Daan (lamp offering), transforming the city into a mesmerising sea of lights. The festival also includes Ganga Aarti, devotional singing, and community feasts.
