Jagannath Rath Yatra 2025 Begins Today: Puri All Set For The Grand Festival – Check Wishes, Dates And Details
A huge gathering of devotees has arrived in Puri for the start of the annual Jagannath Rath Yatra, which begins today, Friday 27th June. The Jagannath Rath Yatra is a major Hindu festival held every year in Puri, Odisha.
It is one of the most important religious events in India and is also celebrated in other parts of the world. During this festival, three deities-Lord Jagannath, his brother Balabhadra (Balarama), and sister Subhadra-are taken out of their temple and placed on huge wooden chariots. They travel from the Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple.

Rath Yatra 2025 Preparedness:
District Magistrate Siddharth Swain and Superintendent of Police Vineet Agarwal provided details about the preparations being made to ensure the festival runs smoothly and safely. "The three chariots have been brought to their designated place for their Gundicha Yatra. Elaborate security arrangements have been made. NSG is also present here." Said Puri District Magistrate Siddharth Swain to ANI.
"Police have made adequate preparations. All measures for public safety, crowd management and public convenience have been taken. Traffic facilitation has been taken care of. Central agencies have also assisted. The Rath Yatra will be conducted smoothly.
Our surveillance teams will remain present at the integrated control room. We also have anti-drone teams. Except for the friendly drones, action will be taken against any other drone movement," Puri SP Vineet Agarwal added.
When is Rath Yatra in 2025?
This year, the Rath Yatra starts on June 27 and ends on July 5. It lasts nine days, and each day has its own special rituals.
According to the Hindu calendar, Rath Yatra begins on Dwitiya Tithi (second day of the bright half of the Ashadha month), which falls on June 27 in 2025. The best time to start the procession is Abhijit Muhurta, between 11:56 AM and 12:52 PM.
How is it Celebrated?
The celebration begins with a ritual called Snana Purnima, where the three deities are bathed with 109 pots of water. After this, they are kept in isolation (called Anavasara) until the day of the Yatra. On the day of Rath Yatra, the idols are placed on beautifully decorated wooden chariots.
A special ritual called Chera Pahara is performed by the royal family of Odisha. The king sweeps the area around the chariots as a mark of humility and devotion.
People of all ages pull the massive chariots with ropes, chanting and singing as the procession moves through the streets. The event symbolizes unity and equality, welcoming everyone to take part.
