Is TikTok Coming Back To India Soon? Why Chinese Apps TikTok, AliExpress, Shein Are Trending?

Social media platforms X and Reddit have been buzzing with memes after users claimed they could access TikTok's website in India. Despite these claims, the app remains unavailable on both the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has refuted these assertions, confirming that TikTok's site is still blocked across all internet service providers in India.

According to NDTV Profit, the DoT has reiterated that TikTok's website remains inaccessible through any Indian ISP. This clarification comes amidst a flurry of online activity suggesting otherwise. Meanwhile, ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, has not issued any official statement regarding changes in the platform's availability in India.

Memes and Reactions on Social Media

The unexpected news sparked a wave of humorous reactions on X. Users expressed their surprise and nostalgia with playful comments. One user humorously noted, "TikTok website is back in India after 5 years, but the app is still unavailable. Content creators me khushi ki laher." Another joked about technological advancements since TikTok's last presence: "Last time TikTok was in India, we only had filters. Now? AI will be the influencer."

As users shared their thoughts, #TikTok quickly became a trending topic across India. Within just a few hours, more than 105,000 posts were recorded under this hashtag. The chatter highlighted both excitement and scepticism among users regarding TikTok's potential return.

TikTok's Ban in India

TikTok was banned in India in June 2020 as part of a broader government crackdown on mobile applications. This decision followed a deadly clash with Chinese forces in Galwan, which resulted in the deaths of 20 Indian soldiers. At that time, Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ravi Shankar Prasad described the ban as "India's digital strike" against China.

The ban included 59 mobile apps and marked one of the most significant actions taken by the Indian government against foreign technology companies. Since then, TikTok has remained inaccessible to Indian users through official channels.

Despite recent rumours and social media buzz, there is no indication from ByteDance or Indian authorities that TikTok will be making a comeback anytime soon. The situation remains unchanged as per official statements from relevant parties.
