Meanwhile, schools will also remain shut in Tamil Nadu, and Kerala districts for different occasions. Likely, schools will also remain shut in other Indian states, such as Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Haryana, and Uttarakhand, on the occasion of Sawan Shivratri.

Tamil Nadu's Ariyalur district has declared a school holiday today, July 23 to mark the Aadi Thiruvathirai festival, dedicated to Lord Shiva and is observed across the state on the month of Aadi. In Telangana, there has been no official notice released for school holidays, but services may be hit because of the Bandh called by student union in the state. Schools in Kerala will be closed today as the state government has declared a public holiday on July 23 after the demise of veteran CPI (M) leader and former Chief Minister VS Achuthanandan.

Sawan Shivratri

While Masik Shivratri is observed every month of the year. Shivratri which falls during the month of Sawan holds special significance among devotees of Lord Shiva. Sawan is dedicated to the arrival of monsoon and holds immense significance among Hindu devotees who observe fast, engage in prayers, and other rituals. The month of Sawan began in 2025 on July 11 and will conclude on August 9.

Masik Shivratri, a monthly observance, is a significant occasion for fasting and offering prayers to Lord Shiva. It occurs on the Chaturdashi Tithi during Krishna Paksha. The Shivratri that takes place in the month of Sawan is specifically referred to as Sawan Shivratri.
This year, Sawan Shivratri will be celebrated on July 23. As per Drik Panchang, the Chaturdashi Tithi begins at 04:39 AM on July 23 and concludes at 02:28 AM on July 24. Devotees can perform the nishita kaal puja from 12:33 AM to 01:07 AM on July 24.
The time for concluding the Shivratri fast, known as Parana, is set for 06:13 AM on July 24. Observing these rituals with devotion is believed to bring blessings and spiritual benefits to those who participate.
