iPhone 17 Trial Production Begins in India; Foxconn Starts Importing Key Components from China, Says Report
Apple supplier Foxconn Technology Group has started importing key components into India for the trial production of the upcoming iPhone 17, according to a report by The Economic Times. These shipments mark a crucial step in Apple's expanding India strategy, as the company accelerates its efforts to manufacture future iPhone models outside China.
Key Imports for iPhone 17 Begin in India
Customs records indicate that approximately 10% of Foxconn's component imports from China in June were designated for the iPhone 17. The imported parts include critical elements such as display assemblies, cover glass, mechanical housings, and integrated rear camera modules. While the import volumes are relatively modest, the report notes that they are likely meant for limited-scale trial production.

The bulk of other shipments during the same period were for older iPhone models, namely the iPhone 14 and iPhone 16, which Apple is preparing to push aggressively during India's upcoming festive shopping season.
Production Timeline for iPhone 17
Trial production of the iPhone 17 is expected to commence in India this month, with full-scale mass production set to begin in August. Apple plans to officially launch the iPhone 17 globally in September. Notably, this marks a significant shift in Apple's manufacturing strategy, as the tech giant aims to begin simultaneous production of new iPhone models in both India and China for the first time.
India's Rising Role in Apple's Global Supply Chain
Apple's move to manufacture high-end devices like the iPhone 17 in India underlines the country's growing importance in the company's global supply chain. This strategy also reflects Apple's long-term goal of reducing its dependence on China, particularly for exports to the United States-a decision partly influenced by elevated U.S. tariffs on Chinese imports under the Donald Trump administration.
By 2026, Apple reportedly aims to completely transition iPhone production for the U.S. market from China to India. This follows a trend that has seen India increasingly integrated into Apple's New Product Introduction (NPI) process.
While the iPhone 14 began production in India about six weeks after China, the iPhone 15 saw near-simultaneous manufacturing in both countries. In 2024, Apple further advanced this timeline by including India in the NPI for the base iPhone 16 model-breaking China's exclusive hold on the process.
