Vice President Calls for Gender and Caste Diversity in Leadership for Inclusive Growth

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar urged Indian businesses to expand globally, not only in markets but also in ideas and solutions. Speaking at the 19th CII-ITC Sustainability Awards, he emphasised the need for inclusivity by supporting MSMEs and promoting diversity in leadership roles. Dhankhar highlighted the importance of building Brand India on quality, trust, innovation, and ancient wisdom adapted for modern times.

Promoting Diversity in Leadership

He stressed that the private sector should not only focus on economic gains but also contribute to India's future development. "We are not mercenaries, we don't stand for exploitation. We believe in the positive unleashing of our energy to realise our dreams for the benefit of society at large. A truly developed nation is one where opportunity is not the privilege of the few but the right of all," Dhankhar stated.

Private Sector's Role in National Development

The vice president pointed out that India's growth relies heavily on the private sector's involvement. He noted that while the government acts as an enabler, it is ultimately up to businesses to drive innovation and create jobs. "The government alone cannot score the penalty goal... The private sector has a vital role to play because at the end of the day it is industry that drives innovation, creates livelihoods and builds the architecture of national development," he said.

Dhankhar also warned against external influences shaping India's narratives. He urged everyone to stay committed to national interests and sustainable development. "Let us not allow others to calibrate us. Let us firmly root ourselves to commitment for this nation and keep this nation always first," he remarked.

Sustainability as a Competitive Advantage

Highlighting sustainability, Dhankhar encouraged industries to invest in renewable energy and green technologies. He advised treating sustainability as a competitive edge rather than mere compliance. "Let Indian industry become the torchbearer of this green revolution... The moment we take it in the compliance groove; the battle is lost," he cautioned.

On education and health sectors, Dhankhar noted their shift from societal contributions to profit-driven ventures. He expressed concern over this trend, urging businesses to balance profitability with social responsibility.

India's Economic Aspirations

Discussing India's economic potential, Dhankhar mentioned aspirations beyond becoming a five trillion-dollar economy. He highlighted India's position as a reliable partner in global value chains amidst global turmoil. "India is on the right path of becoming a trusted economy, a reliable partner in the global value chain," he stated.

The vice president emphasised research and development's importance in driving change. He called on industries to invest more in indigenous designs and innovations that impact ground realities.

Inclusivity and Diversity

Dhankhar addressed gender and caste diversity challenges within leadership roles. He advocated for genuine appreciation of diversity beyond affirmative action. "When it comes to gender, we champion affirmative action but the real problem is when gender discrimination is subtle," he explained.

He also reflected on India's historical inclusivity, noting its contributions towards a harmonious society. Dhankhar found it surprising when other countries attempt to teach India about inclusivity.

Government's Enabling Role

The vice president acknowledged government efforts like infrastructure plans and digital connectivity initiatives aimed at reducing friction and boosting productivity. However, he reiterated that substantial progress requires active participation from all societal sectors including local governments, civil society, and communities.

Dhankhar cited projections from the Economic Survey 2024-25 indicating a 6.2% growth in India's industrial sector driven by construction and energy advancements. This growth stems from ongoing reforms, infrastructure investments, and strategic digitisation efforts.

In conclusion, Vice President Dhankhar called upon Indian businesses to embrace their role as co-architects of India's future while prioritising inclusivity, sustainability, and innovation for national development.
