India and Ghana Strengthen Ties as Co-Travellers in Development Journey

India and Ghana have elevated their relationship to a comprehensive partnership. Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasised India's role as a co-traveller in Ghana's development. This announcement followed discussions with Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama. Modi stated that both nations aim to double their trade within five years, highlighting India's commitment to Ghana's growth.

The meeting between Modi and Mahama marked the first Indian prime ministerial visit to Ghana in three decades. Upon arrival, Modi was warmly welcomed by President Mahama at the airport. The leaders signed four agreements covering cooperation in culture and traditional medicine, further strengthening bilateral ties.

Trade and Investment Growth

India is a major trading partner for Ghana, being the largest destination for its exports, primarily gold. Indian companies have invested approximately two billion dollars across 900 projects in Ghana. Modi announced plans to double mutual trade within five years, reflecting the growing economic partnership between the two countries.

In the financial technology sector, India is prepared to share its expertise in UPI digital payments with Ghana. This collaboration aims to enhance financial inclusion and digital transactions in the West African nation.

Security and Defence Cooperation

Both leaders agreed on the need to combat terrorism, which they described as humanity's enemy. Modi expressed gratitude for Ghana's support in counter-terrorism efforts. The two countries will strengthen cooperation in defence, focusing on training armed forces, maritime security, defence supply, and cyber security.

Modi emphasised the importance of security through solidarity in defence relations. This approach aims to bolster mutual trust and collaboration in addressing regional security challenges.

Global South and Diplomatic Engagements

The leaders discussed issues affecting the Global South, reaffirming their commitment to its priorities. Modi appreciated Ghana's participation in the Voice of Global South Summit. He also highlighted India's pride in securing permanent G20 membership for the African Union during its presidency.

Modi and Mahama expressed concerns over conflicts in West Asia and Europe. They advocated for resolving these issues through dialogue and diplomacy, stressing that this is not an era for war.

Ghana is undergoing significant economic restructuring, and Modi assured all possible assistance from India. This support underscores India's dedication to fostering economic stability and growth in Ghana.
