Teachers' Day is celebrated on September 5 as the birth anniversary of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, who was India's second president and the first Vice President. He was a scholar of Indian philosophy, taught at Calcutta University, Oxford University, and Mysore University and abroad. Apart from teaching, he represented India at UNESCO and as Ambassador to the Soviet Union. He was honoured with the Bharat Ratna in 1954. Since 1962, September 5 has been observed as Teachers' Day across India, recognising the contribution of teachers in building the careers of the youth of India.
