Sharad Purnima is one of the three most revered full moon days in the Hindu tradition-alongside Kartik Purnima and Jyeshtha Purnima. It marks the transition from the monsoon to the autumn season and is considered the night when the moon shines with all sixteen of its Kalas (phases), making it the most potent and spiritually charged full moon of the year.
Sharad Purnima Kheer: Know Significance of Kheer Eating on Sharad Purnima Night
According to Hindu scriptures, Lord Krishna performed the Maha Raas Leela on the night of Sharad Purnima during the Dwapar Yuga, where the moon witnessed the divine dance and is said to have showered nectar in joy. It is believed that on this night, the moon is at its most potent form, brimming with all sixteen Kalas and its rays have curative and spiritual benefits.
Hence, the tradition of preparing kheer and placing it under moonlight is considered both sacred and health-giving. The kheer made from milk, rice, and sugar not only becomes infused with divine energy but also carries health benefits. Milk provides protein and calms the digestive system, while rice starch is known to help relieve constipation and improve digestion-making it a light and soothing food during seasonal transitions.
