Online Gaming Bill 2025 Triggers Sharp Crash in Gaming Stocks: Nazara Tech Drops Nearly 7%, Delta Corp Gains

Gaming stocks in India took a sharp hit on Wednesday, August 20, following the Union Cabinet's clearance of a proposed bill that could drastically change the landscape of online gaming in the country. Shares of Nazara Technologies, Delta Corp and OnMobile Global all dropped more than 6% intraday, reacting to the government's move to ban all forms of real-money online games, including those that are based on skill.

What is in the Proposed Online Gaming Bill?

The steep decline in online gaming stock prices comes in response to the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, which was approved by the Union Cabinet on Tuesday. As per reports, the bill proposes a complete ban on real money online gaming and its advertisements. It also prescribes penalties including imprisonment and/or fines for individuals or platforms that offer or promote such games.

The legislation is seen as an attempt to clearly differentiate between real-money gaming (even if skill-based) and other categories like eSports or online social games, which would remain unaffected under the new framework. The bill marks a significant regulatory shift aimed at curbing financial and societal risks linked with real-money gaming platforms, which have witnessed exponential growth in India.
