Game of Growth: Azooka Labs, Indian Trailblazer in Molecular Biology Innovation Challenges Global Giants

Azooka Labs, founded by molecular biologist Dr Fathima Benazir and her childhood friend-turned-co-founder Alex D. Paul, is fast emerging as one of India's most compelling biotech success stories. What began as a scientific pursuit has now evolved into a globally relevant company with real-world impact-proving that deep science ventures can scale from Indian soil.

In this exclusive conversation with GoodReturns, co-founder Dr Fathima Benazir shares the inspiring journey behind Azooka Labs, the challenges of building a biotech startup in India, and how she is redefining global standards through homegrown innovation.

Dr Fathima Benazir: The Accidental Entrepreneur

When asked about her transition from scientist to entrepreneur at Azooka Labs, Dr Fathima Benazir said, "It was accidentally, I did not plan it......but I was very passionate about research." A scientist by training, her initial goal was to pursue post-doctoral research abroad. However, candid conversations with her childhood friend and now co-founder Alex D. Paul challenged her to think beyond academic publications and consider how her research could create real-world impact, she shared.

Game of Growth: Azooka Labs, Indian Trailblazer in Molecular Biology Innovation

The answer came in the form of Azooka Labs, launched at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru. With Dr Benazir's expertise in molecular biology and Alex's business acumen, the startup was born-driven by a shared vision to make research accessible and impactful.

Azooka's Flagship Product, Tinto-Rang: Safe Innovation in Molecular Diagnostics

Speaking about Azooka's breakthrough product, Tinto-Rang, Dr Fathima Benazir told GoodReturns, "Tinto-Rang is India's first food-grade, plant-based, non-carcinogenic dye used for DNA and RNA staining in molecular biology and diagnostics." It presents a safer alternative to conventional synthetic dyes, many of which are toxic or carcinogenic.

Tinto-Rang's importance became especially apparent during the COVID-19 pandemic, when Azooka scaled from zero to over one million diagnostic kits in just three months, helping labs across India perform safer RT-PCR testing. This rapid growth propelled the company from a 12% market share in molecular diagnostics pre-COVID to 80%, establishing its credibility in a space long dominated by Western brands.

Know About Company Azooka Labs

Azooka is more than a product company. Dr Benazir believes Indian biotech must move beyond offering services to building globally competitive, home-grown innovations. She advocates for stronger risk capital support and longer gestation periods for deep-tech startups-areas often neglected in India's startup ecosystem.

The company is now expanding into genomics, personalised healthcare, and premium molecular biology platforms, aiming to make India a global hub for biotech discovery, not just manufacturing.

Azooka's impact has been widely recognised. The startup received the Technology Development Board (TDB) Award for its indigenous innovations and contributions during the pandemic.

How Dr Benazir's Azooka Fought Bias and Built Trust in a Foreign-Dominated Biotech Market

When GoodReturns asked Dr Fathima Benazir about her journey as a woman entrepreneur and the stigma she faced while building Azooka Labs, she reflected candidly, "For any entrepreneur, the journey is tough. I don't see any difference in terms of gender, except that, for a woman, you also have to manage your home and children, which is an additional responsibility. For me, the biggest challenge was convincing my family."

Despite the breakthrough, the journey was far from smooth, she shared. Dr Benazir faced multiple challenges as a woman founder, a first-time entrepreneur, and someone promoting Indian-made biotech products in a market that traditionally trusted foreign labels.

Customers were initially hesitant. Some openly questioned whether an Indian alternative could match the quality of American or German products. It took relentless effort and unwavering belief in their product's performance for Azooka to earn trust. Once laboratories tested it, retention was strong, driven by product safety and reliability.
