Four Moons In the Sky? A Rare Sighting in Russia's St. Petersburg Sky; Check Out Now
An extremely rare phenomenon of four moons appearing simultaneously over Russia's St. Petersburg was recordded during the night of January 31 & February 1st .The unusual sight left residents mesmerised, with visuals quickly going viral on social media.

Videos and images circulating online showed what looked like four glowing moons aligned horizontally, floating above the winter skyline of St. Petersburg.
According to Scintists, the phenomemon is very rare called paraselene phenomenon, also known as a mock moon.
What Is the Paraselene or Mock Moon Phenomenon?
A paraselene is a lunar halo phenomenon that occurs when moonlight passes through plate-shaped ice crystals suspended in high-altitude cirrus clouds. As the moonlight refracts through these crystals, it bends at a precise 22-degree angle, producing bright spots known as mock moons on either side of the real Moon.
In this particular event, atmospheric conditions were exceptionally favourable. Slightly wobbling ice crystals created two mock moons on each side, intensifying the vertical glow and giving rise to the illusion of four moons in the sky.
Why the Four Moons Illusion Looked So Dramatic
Astronomers explain that the phenomenon appeared especially vivid because the Moon was positioned low on the horizon, which enhanced the brightness and symmetry of the paraselenae. Unlike sundogs, which are relatively common during the daytime-paraselene events are much rarer, as moonlight is significantly fainter than sunlight.
The combination of crystal alignment, moon position, and clear winter skies made this four-moon illusion an exceptionally rare and visually striking sight.
Scientists have clarified that paraselene phenomena have no astrological or geological implications. They are natural atmospheric optics caused by ice crystals and do not signal climate events or anomalies. Such displays are simply rare combinations of weather and light conditions.
Social Media Reactions and Viral Videos
Footage of the phenomenon was widely shared on X by international outlets and local observers. Many viewers described the scene as "surreal," "eerie," and "otherworldly," with some mistaking it for a astronomical anomaly.
