Durga Ashtami Puja Rituals
Maha Ashtami is one of the most significant days of Durga Puja and is observed with great devotion. The day begins with the invocation of Goddess Durga, followed by the Mahasnan (ceremonial bath of the deity), havan (sacred fire ritual) and Kanya Pujan, a revered ritual where nine young girls symbolizing the nine forms of Durga (Navadurga) are worshipped with offerings of food, clothes and gifts.
Devotees also participate in Saptashati path (recitation of Durga Saptashati), chanting of mantras, aarti (devotional songs), and various forms of folk and classical dance performances in pandals. The entire day is marked by an air of divinity and joy, with beautifully decorated Durga idols, community feasting and cultural programs taking center stage.
Spiritual Significance of Durga Ashtami
According to scriptures like the Devi Bhagavata Purana, Goddess Durga is worshipped in her various forms during Navratri. On Ashtami, she is venerated as Mahagauri, the eighth form of Durga, who symbolizes purity, serenity, and spiritual elevation. The legend says that after undergoing severe penance, Goddess Parvati's complexion turned dark.
Moved by her devotion, Lord Shiva cleansed her with the sacred water of the Ganges, transforming her into the radiant Mahagauri. Worshipping her on this day is believed to wash away sins, grant strength and bestow inner peace and divine grace.
