Diwali School Holidays 2025: Diwali-Chhath Puja, Full State-Wise List Of School Holidays From Oct 18 To Nov 2

The majority of states in India have declared a week-long holiday for schools, colleges, and universities for the celebration of Diwali to Chhath Puja. These holidays are likely to begin on October 18th with the celebration of Dhanteras and extend till Chhath Puja. States where schools and colleges will be closed next week are Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Bihar, Maharashtra, Assam, and Punjab among others. Some states, like Jammu & Kashmir has declared over 2-week long holidays till November 2nd.

Jammu & Kashmir Diwali 2025 Holidays:

The state has declared a five-day holidays across all Jammu division for all government and private schools, which will start from October 19th onward. This is solely for Diwali celebration.

However, the holiday is extended till November 2nd which also includes occasions like Chath Puja, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel's Birthday and more. The University of Jammu declared a three-day holiday on October 20th, 22d and 23rd, and accordingly postponed examinations that were scheduled on these days.

Punjab Diwali 2025 Holidays:

The state of Punjab has announced a four-day break from October 19th to October 22nd. It is reported that October 21st, Tuesday is likely to be post-Diwali holiday in most schools, and will conclude with Vishwakarma Puja on October 22nd.

Delhi Diwali 2025 Holidays:

In the national capita, schools are closed on October 20th for main Diwali celebration and October 22nd for Govardhan Puja.

Uttar Pradesh Diwali 2025 Holidays:

In this state, schools and other education institutions will enjoy a five-day break starting from October 19th. However, since October 19th is Sunday, main Diwali holidays will commence from October 20th to 23rd.

Assam & Odisha Diwali 2025 Holidays:

Schools in this state will be closed on October 20th for the celebration of Laxmi Pujan and Kali Puja.

Maharashtra Diwali 2025 Holidays:

In this largest financial state of India, a four-day holiday will be observed for Diwali from October 18th to 21st. Notably, some institutions are likely to extend this holiday to October 22 and 23 for Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dooj which are widely celebrated in the state.

Tamil Nadu Diwali 2025 Holidays:

In this state, schools, colleges and universities are likely to be shut from October 18th to October 21st for Diwali.

Andhra Pradesh Diwali 2025 Holidays:

This Diwali, universities and schools are expected to be closed on October 20th. However, they will enjoy a three consecutive days holiday due to October 18th and October 19th being Saturday and Sunday . During the weekend, Dhanteras is being celebrated on October 18th.

Bihar Diwali 2025 Holidays:

In this mega northern state, school holidays are starting from October 18th and will end on October 29. These include celebration for Diwali days and Chath Puja.

Karnataka Diwali 2025 Holidays:

In this state, many schools have been closed from October 8th to October 18th due to teachers participation in the ongoing socioeconomic caste survey. However, the government announced to extend the holidays to October 20th for Naraka Chaturdashi) and on October 22nd for Balipadyami, Deepavali. Since October 19th is a Sunday, schools will be closed on this day as well.

Diwali 2025 Significance:

Diwali is connected to various religious events, deities and personalities, such as being the day Rama returned to his kingdom in Ayodhya with his wife Sita and his brother Lakshmana after defeating the demon king Ravana. It is also widely associated with Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity, and Ganesha, the god of wisdom and the remover of obstacles. Other regional traditions connect the holiday to Vishnu, Krishna, Durga, Shiva, Kali, Hanuman, Kubera, Yama, Yami, Dhanvantari, or Vishvakarman, as per Wikipedia.
