Diwali Bank Holidays 2025: Indian scheduled banks will be closed for the seven-day-long Diwali festival that is starting from October 17. Although, the main Diwali event will kick off on October 18th with Dhanteras, Naraka Chaturdashi and Kali Puja, followed by Choti Diwali, Govardhan Pooja, the auspicious and main Diwali Laxmi Puja and Bhaidooj. India has declared public holidays on several of these Diwali days, while many states have declared a week-long school holiday for the celebration of the entire festival. Just like that, Indian banks will also be closed; however, the holidays will vary from city to city.

Bank Holidays On October 17:

Rama Ekadashi or also called as Ekadashi Parana is being celebrated on Friday, where devotees fast to receive the blessings of Lord Vishnu.

However, as per RBI's holiday list, this is day is not a bank holiday. The main bank holidays for Diwali festival will start from October 18th.

Bank Holidays On October 18:

On this day, Dhanteras is celebrated which is observed to be the first day of Diwali, as devotees worship Lord Kuber and Goddess Lakshmi.

Closed: Banks will be shut in cities like Guwahati.

Opened: Except Guwahati, banks are opened in all other cities including in Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Jaipur and more. October 17th falls on third Saturday which is a full working day for banks, however, some cities may have half-day due to the festival.

This day marks as Kali Chaudas, Hanuman Puja.

Closed: All banks are closed in India since its Sunday.

This day marks as Narak Chaturdashi (Choti Diwali), Tamil Deepavali, Lakshmi Puja, Main Diwali, Kedar Gauri Vrat, Chopda Puja, Sharda Puja, and Kali Puja.

Closed: Banks are closed in cities like Agartala, Ahmedabad, Aizawl, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Dehradun, Gangtok, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Itanagar, Jaipur, Kanpur, Kochi, Kohima, Kolkata, Lucknow, New Delhi, Panaji, Patna, Raipur, Ranchi, Shillong, Shimla, Thiruvananthapuram, and Vijayawada.

Opened: Banks will be opened in Belapur, Bhubaneswar, Imphal, Jammu, Mumbai, Nagpur, and Srinagar.

This day is auspicious is referred to Amavasya - Diwali Snan, Diwali Devpuja. .

Closed: Banks will be closed in cities like Belapur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Gangtok, Imphal, Jammu, Mumbai, Nagpur, and Srinagar.

Closed: Banks will be closed in Ahmedabad, Gangtok, Imphal, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, and Shimla.

Day 1: The first day, known as Dhanteras, is dedicated to cleaning homes and purchasing small items of gold. Lakshmi is the focus of worship on that day.

Day 2: The second day, called Naraka Chaturdashi or Choti Diwali, commemorates Krishna's destruction of Narakasura; prayers are also offered for the souls of ancestors.

Day 3: On the third day, Lakshmi Puja, families seek blessings from Lakshmi to ensure their prosperity; light diyas, candles, and fireworks; and visit temples. It is the main day of the Diwali festival.

Day 4: The fourth day, known as Govardhan Puja, Balipratipada, or Annakut, commemorating Krishna's feat of lifting up a mountain, Govardhan Hill, to protect the local cowherds in defiance of Indra, the king of the gods, who had sent a torrential rain upon them. It is also the first day of Karttika and the start of the new year in the Vikrama (Hindu) calendar. Merchants perform religious ceremonies and open new account books.

Day 5: The fifth day, called Bhai Dooj, Bhai Tika, or Bhai Bij, celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters. On that day sisters pray for the success and well-being of their brothers, similar to the holiday Raksha Bandhan.
